OK,

Just taken delivery of a garmin edge 705. I want to record my usual mid-week ride as a course but the option does not always appear under the training menu. In fact it appears in the majority of cases when there is no satellite coverage. Having said that it sometimes appears with the satellites there too.

A course is something you have either created yourself or downloaded.

    This main is your friend

Yes, I have read Frank Kinlan's website. Very good however no answer to my query. I have a regular ride which I have recorded and is now in my history. Do I have to follow this as a route under "Where to" or can it be transferred (sans pc/mac I can't be bothered to plug it in as yet) on the unit itself to a course.

Menu - Training - Courses - Create New

They you'll see a list of rides taken from your history. Choose the one you want to convert into a course.

Brilliant thanks, I was confused (being a simple degree qualified chartered mechanical engineer). I thought new meant brand spanking new, not anything from the history.

    Ta much.

You can also create courses from scratch by visiting http://www.bikehike.co.uk

I've been using it with my Edge 605 and my Forerunner 205 and it's brilliant.

    Thanks Giant Mike,

I have used this as much as possible this week to justify the cost. I loved racing myself on my 29 mile twice a week route through dartmoor, and gained 5 minutes.

    More questions though:

    1) When the Virtual training partner is running - how do I get it to display how far behind/in front they are?

    2) On my sunday club ride I wanted to stop the timer (which I did) and then start again, but when I did that the unit kept directing me back theway that we had arrived not the second half of the route up the hill. how do I just make it carry on recording?

    3) Are the topo maps with buying, as a road rider I never go offroad (plus I have the European City Navigator ones installed) so is it worth the expense?

You can cycle through the various screens when riding a course by pressing or flicking the "cursor button" (centrally located directly beneath the screen).

From memory the screens available that appear below the user defined data fields (max of 4) at the top of the display:
    - course info (distance to next course point / time to next course point / distance to end of course / "good time" for course)
    - course map screen
    - virtual partner with distance in front / behind
    - course elevation profile
