Im soo interested also - was just about to buy a 2009 ex 8 but im thinking im gonna wait just a litle bit longer - found some info: -

Also worcester bike shop seem to have good knowledge and pics on their website - google them.

''The EX 8 in my opinion was one of the bargains of 2009 before exchange rates and credit crunches took their toll. For around £1800 Tony got himself a very handy machine which he's been putting to good use since. Apart from the abilities of the bike itself it was well spec'd and looks the business in monochrome – far better than than 2010 Specialized Enduro I mentioned the other day.

You can see in the pic above that the attention to detail on the EX range continues for 2010 and not just in the careful use of graphics and annodising. Most importantly the top end EX models gain the 'bottomless' Fox DCRV shock exclusive to Trek and their sister brand Gary Fisher. It seems to perform superbly on the Roscoe, so Trek have lost no time applying it to their own bikes, including the EX 8.

Add an oversized bottom bracket into the mix and a tapered headtube and you've got very nearly a future proof (for the foreseeable future at least) bike that is already impressively competent. The more I see of the big brand bikes the more I wonder where Marin fits into the mix to be honest.

Trek also have the Remedy for the freeride/all mountain crowd, now in carbon with 150mm of travel. As well as a special carbon weave (rich man's toupé?) in the downtube there's also an external 'bash guard' on the lower half to protect against rock strikes.

As well as a 95mm wide bottom bracket the front mech area comes with a direct mount front derailleur andally versions get ISCG mounts for chain guides or, of course a Hammerschmidt transmission. It's interesting that the cost of this remains high enough for few manufacturers to be fitting it as standard but at least they make provision for it!

As with the EX range, the DRCV Fox shock is present and correct. Should be a popular bike in my view in rockier lands, even if once again Surrey singletrack is wasted on it. Remember, a properly sorted singlespeed keeps that at bay all day long…''

Based on what I`ve seen of the 2010 Specialized prices,I reckon it will be £2k,if the spec is maintained.

i was looking at the ex 8 and found this on the 2010

    http://www.speeds-cycles.co.uk/mtb-full-suspension/2010-trek-fuel-ex8-white.html

looks like a small price increase

im still waiting to test the ex8 and hope its good!

the 2009 looks a good deal now as evans knocked it down to £1699 and pedal on has it for £1575

  • had a test on the 2009 EX8 last weekend and it was a fantastic machine, so much so that when i took it back i asked them to get me one...

I was then told "sorry we can't get any 15.5 in now!". GRRRRRRR

why let me frigin trial it then!

now i can either buy it elsewhere or wait for the 2010 but from what i'm hearing on the DRCV shock and the overall stiffness increase on the 2010 i may wait!

and if that is the 2010 trek in the pic above i think it looks nicer too.

the pic looks awfully like a 9.8 and the black 2010 ex8 on the site looks like the 9.9!

    Hi jonas.
has the rear shock got a lock out?
how did the bike handle on the road, was there much pedal bob?
  • are you on about the EX8 (09)?

it has lockout on front and rear shocks, i noticed no pedal bob (my father was following on his GF Superchaged and he also commented on the lack of bob when climbing) at all.

it rides well, is responsive and feels like it can take almost anything. i have to admit when i was on the test i felt very confident when i was on the moors. just pointed it where i wanted to go and it sucked up everything i threw at it.

i would have bought the 09 version there and then had a 15" frame been available.

the only negative comment i had was the seat was a tad uncomfortable but that is easily remedied!

Some models have 130mm, some have 120mm. IIRC the carbon ones have the shorter travel.

I have an ex8 09 - there is lockout on the fork and propedal on the shock. The propedal virtually eliminates pedal bob except when you are standing up (there is some movement sitting down with propedal on - just not a lot).

Also, if you leave the back fully active you get very good grip uphill with little if any bob

  • Hello,

After a bit of info from an expert please.

I am looking to buy my first full suspension Mountain Bike and I am considering between a 2010 Trek Fuel Ex 8 or the EX 9. The EX 9 is £500 more than the EX 8. Looking at the spec - see links below.(not a detailed spec) Is it worth paying the extra £500 ?

    http://www.speeds-cycles.co.uk/mtb-full ... white.html

    http://www.speeds-cycles.co.uk/mtb-full ... l-ex9.html

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Mark.

Hi Mark, I'm not an expert by any means! However I looked at both the 8 & 9 when buying mine and couldn't justify the extra money.

The 9 had only marginally better spec - and the colour wasn't as nice

My mate bought a 9.8 carbon and still prefers mine!

  • Many thanks Wemac. That's a great help.

My only other consideration is a 2010 Lapierre Zesty 314. Not sure if this is a better or worse spec than the EX 8 ?

can't help you with that - I stopped looking once I got a ride on the ex8 (i know what i'm like when I have too much choice!)

By all accounts the Zesty is a nice bike too. The standing advice seems to be to try before you buy whenever possible.

there isnt much in it mark tbh. the zesty has better cranks and wheels, but the trek is cheaper. the trek is more xc orientated than the zesty which is definitely on the moe trail/all mountain side of the fence. that ex9 does look nice, but imo the zesty 514 is better looking

I can't find the carbon ones on Treks website. It only lists 2009 models as EX8 and EX8 WSD, both with 130mm. :?

i managed to pick up my nice shiny ex8 today :D
really liked how it rode and managed to get evans to price match pedal on at £1575
only issues are that the seat post needs 2/3 inch lopping off it and im struggling to unclip the pedals.
can anyone recomend pedals that are cheap and adjustable as these Custom Candy C pedals are not.
are the pedals with one side for flat and the other for clipless shoes worth a shout?
I can't wait for a blast on it tomorrow!

    Hi Gonga.
Bought mine from Pedal On . What did you think of their service? Why did you switch to Evans?
As for the pedals, I put them straight on Ebay. Got £25 so can't moan!
I'm on Wellgo MG1 flats now which I really like. Tried Shimano 520s (adjustable tension) which seem to be the choice for most clipless beginners (and I can see the advantages), but prefer the flats for a number of reasons.

    Hi mat :D

i needed to finance half the bike and could not do it over the internet.
with pedal on a bit far to go i needed somewhere local.
i was well chuffed to get a price match although its always better to reward the company that is selling for the price that others are not :D

i really like the ability to pull the pedal up with the Candy's but disengaging is hard.
is there a trade off with the adjustable pedals between how easy it is to clip out and how well your clipped in?

Well I've limited experience with clipless (there are loads of pedal threads on this forum) and I guess there is more chance of disengageing when using the loosest setting, but I didn't have any issues up at Afan when using the loosest setting. Idea being that once you get used to them, you can tighten them up to the required tension.

i bought my trek remedy 7 from pedal on. took me an hour and a half to get there, but £380 of FREE stuff was more than worth it! Their podium points system is genius! i found their service to be very good and helpful. plus they had plenty of shiny expensive bikes to gawp at whilst mine was getting ready!

ive got the shimano m520's (which coincidentally was one of my free bits from pedal on) and have only used them on the turbo trainer so far (havent built up the courage to venture on to the road!) to start with they were very hard to engage and disengage, but i realised they werent on their slackest setting today and wound them off, and now they are easy to get in and out of and have given me much more confidence to venture out on to the road.

Bought my Hifi Pro from Pedalon, mainly due to the podium points system and the gear that that can get you :)

Service wasn't anything special and I have taken it back a couple of time to sort some niggles, though they can't sort the rear cassette/chain jumping and I'm fed up taking it back so will go to a more local BS and get it serviced properly.

  • Hi guys, I bought a 2010 fuel ex 8 from my local bike shop but obviously as its a 2010 model I still have a few weeks of waiting. Thaught I would add to the original discussion that I have noticed the 2010 model gets avid elixir 5 brakes rather than juicy 5's of the '09 model, thought it was a misprint as I didnt know avid even made an Elixir 5 until today, lol, should make the braking system even sweeter :D
