There are a lot of other mags - worth a place in the vote! WMB, Dirt, STW?

Also look up some old threads for more info.

You should all buy the next WMB lol. 100th anniversary issue, with a multi page article by yours truly ;-)
  • STW's great.

MBUK is aimed at 15yo's, & is great. When you're 15.

  • MBUK is shite. As mentioned above it's for teenagers.

MBR and Singletrack are my regular purchases.

I used to love "Mountain bike World" I think it was called. It had a great section called "a picture is worth a thousand words" every month, which had the kind of photography that made you wanna go ride immediately, really inspiring, beautifully artistic stuff.

But apart from that, you must buy MBUK, or you'll miss out on the goodness that is mint sauce :D

i read em all, i prefer the bike tests in mbuk and mbr and mbr have good news stuff, but the articles are better in mbuk, mbr seems so serious and they're always talkin about head angle this and short wheelbase that and oh look its bb is too high it needs to rubbing the ground and we use control tyres so we can isolate the bike from tyres, the bike still comes with whatever tyres its speceed with for christs sake so it makes no bloody difference to a cionsumer. ...... abit to wrapped up in being the best testers there i think

At my age it's got to be STW every month.

The others are just full of repeats

I prefer MBUK (and im no longer a teenager). As a beginner I found MBUK covered a range of kit, bikes and riding and was accessible whereas MBR I found to be more techy and difficult to understand. I didnt buy Dirt because it seemed to be mostly photography which is not really my thing. I have stuck with MBUK on subs because I still prefer the range of articles but I also buy others if there is an article / section that interests me.

I like different mags for different reasons:

WMB - gear and bike tests (does what it says on the tin)
STW - more to "read" and appeals to my ageing sensibilities
Dirt - even though I don't do DH, I like to follow the race scene, also has great photos
Decline - good photos and some interesting tech articles

Out of these I'm currently not buying WMB, but that's simply because the overseas subscription price is a killer - I'll pick it up when I'm home.

i like mbuk, mbr and wmb.

does wmb look different these days, i got a copy this month but havent bought it for a few issues but i like the look and feel of it, probs my fave at the moment.

i cant be arsed with singletrack, i like a score out of a number with my reviews, not some hippy rambling.

WMB has changed its look lately with some new sections but with the same principles as ever.

I read WMB (obviously ;-)), MBUK and MBR (less often). Bought Dirt this month for a different read and was quite good - different.

MBR for me its got plenty of wordy articles to read in the bog and though they come across as a bit up themselves at times with the angles and control tyres at least they try to do something different plus the route guide is good.

I occasionally buy MBUK for the tests on shiny new gear but I have no interest in a lot of the stuff in it. That just means I am too old nothing wrong with the mag.

Buy Dirt when I see it a bit american at times but good photos.

Singletrack dear god how can they make a brilliant sport so dull if I relied on singletrack for inspiration I would take up carpet bowls.

Personal favourite is MBR (have subscribed).

I quite like the "Anorak-y" format.

But I've usually read it in about 2 days, so I sometimes buy WMB and MBUK too, just to keep me going for another 4 days.
  • MBUK.....tries too hard. Bit chavvy..crap and useless gifts.
WMB..worth a read every so often...best for reviews
    MBR...monthly purchase...great maps and routes
    Dirt....nice photos

Ah, haven't bought a mag in a bit but I shall buy that one  I think its a bit of a shame that your articles are not upoaded onto the site at a later date like the majotiry of other reviews/articles are.

Tis only a small column lol. But this issue my contribution spans several pages ;-)
  • for me its MBR, used to buy mbuk all the time but got bored of it! much the same every month, greta that it covered all the discipplines etc. but as i had no interest in any of the others apart from trail riding/xc was half a mag wasted for me,

MBR just seems to read So much better imo. i like the way it comes across and enjoy picking it of the door mat when its arrived, used to pick up WHB when the co-op had it at the end of the road but now they are only allowed the strict mags and its not one!

do on the odd occasion pick up Mountain Bike action when at mothers (private news agent up there stocks loads of bike mags) which is often worth a read but wouldnt go out my way to get it!

  • As a 22 year old who is easily impressed by shiny things, i enjoy MBUK. I do intend on trying Singletrack and Dirt though. It's just hard to justify buying 3 magazines, and/or hard to pick just one.

i agree they give you gifts which you probably have anyway and they don't let you look inside

The mags are aimed at different markets and readers - which is a good thing. It would be a bit boring if they were all the same ;-). If I were to sum up:

MBUK - fashion, younger audience, larger bikes
MBR - more about the bike and expensive kit than the rider
STW - more about the rider and rides
WMB - down to earth all rounder
DIRT - geared more towards expensive kit and harder riding

    Or something like that.
  • I used to buy MBUK but since about 2007 it has moved towards the xc end of the 'spectrum' it used to be more hardcore with the wrecking crew. Now i don't buy magazines.
  • MBUK repeats it self year in year out, practically word for word with some parts

What do people want to see more of in magazines? Realistically?
