Orders Please - The Chippy!

The Satisfaction thread got me thinking about food.

Eating has to be, or at least should be, one of the greatest pleasures on earth. Having a really great steak, shoulder of lamb, dim sum, durian, mango, mangosteen etc can bring so much pleasure.

Of course good company helps, but if you close your eyes and block out everything else, really good food can sing in your head, it can even make people smile with joy.

Now the simple chippy may not do that for everyone, but the chhippy is still a national icon. So when you pop down the chippy, what do you order?

If I was in the north of England (home to all the best chippies) then I would order:

1) Steak and Kidney Pudding, chips, peas and gravy. Sliced onions in a side dish with buttered sliced bread. Salt and Vinegar a must.

That very neeeeearly slipped by there! They'd have to go some to beat the chippies on the east coast of Scotland, Anstruther and Arbroath. Ye canny beat a haddock supper frae there. It's got to be haddock though, none of your cod'n'chips nonsense ... and salt and vinegar, not salt and sauce.

Now I'm all hungry. I can sense that my porridge is going to be a disappointment when it's ready, now. :(

  • Large fish and mix for me, although when I was younger I often used to have Braised beef pie and mix, "fry-it" and gravy. Yumm, yumm. :D To eat walking home.

    Mushy peas and chips.
Ah, right. I was thinking that it might be your ordinary fish'n'chips put into a blender, for ease of consumption on the way back from the boozer, like a chippie smoothie.

With a dash of mint sauce, you could be onto a "winner" with that one.

Haddock & Chips, with vinegar from the pickled onion jar and a little bit of salt. Generous helping of ketchup (must be Heinz). None of this la-de-dar tartare sauce tomfoolery.

Someone needs to come down to Bedford and show the chippies round here what chip shop gravy should be like! They should be able to stand the ladle upright in the pot, not this runny muck they try to pass off as gravy.

(a Bedfordian who once lived further north, in fact not too far from Frank the Tank).

As someone who was born in Yorkshire but brought up in the south I'm torn between two sides. The northerner in me says its haddock & chips please whilst the nancy southerner says rock & chips and a can of Tizer.

    Frites with mayo please. 8)
  • I love a good sausage (matron) with chips and gravy.

As for the best chippies? Whitby everytime, any of the three along the front there.

As an aside, does any ever go in for Harry Ramsden's? I can't say I've been for years, I'd much rather have a Chinese chippy with it's greasy, greasy fare.
  • Mmmmm.... chips, haddock n curry sauce (in a tub) with a lil' bit of salt and a shed load of vinegar. Happy days :D

Harry Ramsden's - went to the one in Manchester about 3 years ago. I haven't been back. Overpriced and not very good.

Fish, chips, mushy peas. But here's the important question - which do you leave until last?

I always find the best chips and put them to one side, and make that my last mouthful (I eat very quickly so they don't have time to get cold)

The best chips get eaten first surely? Half of the fish would be left until last 8) Thats the proper way to do it

Personally I always leave the best until last, whatever I'm eating.

The fish is the best bit though. As for a chips debate, fat juicy ones or the crunchy ones at the bottom of the portion? Fat juicy ones all day long. I eat the crunchy ones first and save the fat ones :P

    What on earth's that?!

Being a 'soft Southerner' it's got to be a simple fish and chips. Usually not too fussed which fish although the local chippy at my parent's place does a superb rock and chips.

Australia has fish and chip shops beyond compare! All freshly cooked for you as you place your order, amazing fish (Blue Grenadier is my favourite) and beer batter which is light and crisp.

When I tried to explain that cooked fish was kept hot under lamps and the chips were made in a block and stood around until served, the locals were shocked.

  • Has to be a Haggis supper ........... only recently discorvered Haggis when I moved down this way a year or so ago - cant beat it. Eat all the decent chips first and leave the haggis till last everytime
