    Beetroot. Food of the gods.

Not sure that the placebo would have had many people fooled, however!

Never tried it, although I'm tempted after reading that. I know Tom Simpson used to consume huge amounts of carrots that he would juice, don't know how the nitrate content would compare?
The problem is if everyone starts drinking it, I won't get any edge over the competition. I think buying shares in juice companies is probably the best way to benefit from this research :)

Carrot is best juiced or lightly steamed, possibly the same for beetroot, although you can eat it raw like carrot. Carrot cell walls(like the cell walls in some other green veggies) are nearly impossible to break down in our bodies from raw.

You shouldn't eat too much carrot though, it can actually start to turn your skin orangey if you consume too much! Not sure about beetroot, but if you even eat a small amount and go for a pee an hour later, your pee will have a purple tinge to it. Eat a lot and it can be quite alarming!

I had a beetroot binge the other week. The results were VERY alarming.
  • My parents have grown LOADS of beetroot this year which i have been consuming recently... I wonder if that's why i've been feeling good on the bike? ( or maybe it's because i've trying harder :D )

  • How to doubly alarm your doctor with a urine sample - indulge in a hearty meal of asparagus and beetroot an hour before.

So, you're telling me that a food high in blood-boosting iron will help your performance?

    What a suprise!

Before you know it, the BBC will be telling me that I should drink water when riding!

At a local health food store they had a small restaurant that would juice up celery and carrots with maybe half a beet. Always tasted good to me, even though I won't eat
    cooked beets.

I once consumed a big bowl of beetroot as a kid with the colourful consequences when I went to the toilet. Luckily the person stood next to me who was also at the BBQ was a GP and calmed my worries with his diagnosis of beetroot overdose  Smilie is pretty much the same colour as my p...........
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
