Recommend me something savoury

Is there anything savoury I can carry in my back pocket without it looking like a dish cloth after a couple of hours?
I’ve got enough sweet stuff (get fed up with) for longer rides but fancy something savoury to keep me going. What does everybody else carry?

Ah pepperami.....not thought of that....1 or 2?
Not too greasy either.
Anything else?0 -
as many as you like - they were specifically designed to be carried by cyclists in their back pockets (or so you might think )
Pork pies were also recommended on another thread - which also seems like a good idea, although I would have concerns about the pie's 'structural integrity' while being stuffed into a back pocket.....0 -

Mini Baby bell cheese. The ones that come in a red wax wrapper. Perfect."There's a shortage of perfect breasts in this world, t'would be a pity to damage yours."0

If they're that good though I might try 'em.
Mini Baby Bell soundin' good for a cheese addict.0 -

All the reporters were trying to get rice cakes off Allen Lim at last years TdF!
I find that pork pies get quite greasy/sweaty when warm so I'm not sure they'd be a good option.
How about just a sandwich?0 -

Thanks. Roast beef and mustard, please."There's a shortage of perfect breasts in this world, t'would be a pity to damage yours."0 -

I would be really careful with these in your back pockets for a long time in virtually direct sunlight. Rice can grow a bacteria called bacillus cearous which will give you a very nasty bout of D&V.
I'd maybe make sure they are very very cold if your going to take them out with a view to not eat them for a few hours.Bianchi. There are no alternatives only compromises!

ok, but prone to being crushed/squashed in the back pocket - much like a pork pie...
Assuming that there's nothing else in the pocket, then it probably has to be the best option though...
I like pepperami because being long/thin it will take up very little space. you could even tape them to your top tube..0 -
I agree with Softlad; It's got to stand up to heat & sharing a pocket with other paraphernalia.
Think that rules out sannies & pork pies..................0 -

Odd that the Garmin riders aren't dropping like flies, eh?Le Blaireau (1)0 -

Scotch eggs!
I once had a real craving for a scotch egg in the middle if a long ride. I had to find a shop and bought 2, then ate them without pausing. The craving never happened again to this day...weird.0 -

Seems as they get their stuff out of cool boxes just before they get it and will then pobs eat it within the next hour they'll be ok.
Obviously you know much much more than me about food poisoning
I await your great knowledgable reply.Bianchi. There are no alternatives only compromises!

It wasn't obvious to me that that's how the food was stored and handled. How do you know that?
So you're saying that leaving rice for over an hour at room temperature and it'll be food poisoning?Le Blaireau (1)0 -
Bagels (pref wholemeal).... with chicken and mayo, cut into 1/3s and wrap in foil. Much more structural integrity than a sandwich!
I know what you mean about too many gels - sometimes after events you feel you need to shave your teeth...I'm not saying pedestrians in Hackney are stupid.. but a fixed bayonet would be more use than a fixed gear...0 -

4-Hour/2-Hour Rule
Any ready-to-eat potentially hazardous food, if it has been at temperatures between 5ºC
and 60ºC:
• for a total of less than 2 hours, must be refrigerated or used immediately;
• for a total of longer than 2 hours but less than 4 hours, must be used immediately; or
• for a total of 4 hours or longer, must be thrown out.
Ofcourse this is a worst case scenario and obviously a margin of safety will have been allowed for. Since im not a restaurant/catering firm I have no issue with stretching the 4 hours a little.0 -

The Garmin car has a very large cool box in the boot to keep all their food cold before its handed up at feed stations - was a feature in last week's CW about a day in the life of the Garmin team. CW also specifically recommended that the rice cakes arent made up and used by us amateurs because of the bacterial growth mentioned above (a reader who had tried the recipe CW had previously published became ill after eating them). Of course you're free to take your chances, its your own body, but I won't be taking that risk when there's safer stuff to carry.
Try bagels with cream cheese or peanut butter, and then cut into half and wrapped in foil. They are a bit more robust in the back pocket than sarnies. Likewise chunks of crustier bread like pieces of baguette sliced lengthways hold up a bit better too.0 -
the danger is overstated.
