Pain on outside of knee

Hey guys
Quick question for you. I'm a road cyclist who does a reasonable number of miles a week (15 mile round trip commute each weekday, 70+ mile weekend ride)....about a month ago after a particularly long ride I suffered shooting pain from the outside of my right knee, both up and down my leg. I cut down on the riding for a couple weeks, have been back commuting for the last fortnight with no ill effects, went out this morning for an 80 mile loop and had to get the train home from half way after my knee started playing up again! No instability (as is often the case with ligament injuries), but got very sore.
After doing a little bit of research on the web, seems like it could be a strain of the lateral knee ligament. I'm going to head to the physio next week to see if they can remedy it, but have you guys got any suggestions? Could it be something like my toes are pointing too far in when I'm locked in, causing the outside of the knee to overstretch?
Thanks guys

Possibly but pain on the outside of my knee appears to be a tight IT band. Stretching this and working on strengthening the gluteus muscles seems to be helping.0

Just in case... look at the diagram on the left of this page http://www.cyclefit.co.uk/lemond.html ...I found that diagram after getting pain on outside of knee... didn't get the le wedges, used a couple of under-sole wedges that come with BG Footbeds for my Specialized shoes, pain never came back.
Oh... just read your 'toes in' comment too, tried the sit on a table with feet dangling and see if they toe in or out naturally? ...if so then correct the cleats so that they still line up to a single imaginary horizontal line straight through both feet as you look down. Worth checking.0 -
Outside of the knee cap or the outside of the knee? If the knee sounds like your Illiotal Band and stretching may help - I found using a foam roller sorted it out quicker.
If it's around the kneecap it could be cleats and/ or saddle height (see here), or something else that a physio or doctor might be better able to help with.
There's an article in here http://www.bikeradar.com/road/fitness/a ... rt-2-17445 all about knees although the diagrams could be better.0 -
I had the same problem a few years ago . IT band problem is most likely. I got rid of my issue by lowering the saddle height a bit and taking time to ensure that my cleats were set dead neutral. It worked, not had a problem since.
