Yes, go to the doctor and get some cream from the pharmacist.

If millions of people didn't get them, there'd be no creams for it. There's nothing to be embarrassed about :)

If you think it's bad now, leave it a while until they get REALLY bad, and then you'll require surgery. Get it sorted now, mate.

Creams can help ease the pain but if they are a recurring problem, removal of the skin tags can help (AM/PM minor op) or a hemorrhoidectomy (day patient) will finish them off for good.

The hemorrhoidectomy is excruciating (so I'm told) but they don't come back.

If the piles aren't too bad but they keep coming back, the skin tags op works well. Basically the surgeon seals off the blood supply to the bulges in the weakened veins that cause the pain. It's a general anaesthetic but it only takes a morning or afternoon.

The only other advice I have is to lie down with your feet up and don't try and 'man' through it. GWS.
  • OP:

I suffer from Crohn's Disease. Not as bad as some others I know but still, it's there. My most recent upset was a Perianal Fistula which ended up requiring surgery (under a general, but in and out of hospital in the same day). In a nutshell, a Fistula causes bleeding and discharge, not necessarily both at the same time. Mine was discharging on the skin near the rectum.

As for the embarassment factor, I'm afraid you'll just need to get over it! Excuse me if you think I'm rude, but it's much easier :) Having endured 12 years of being poked, prodded, having cameras and fingers up my backside and goodness knows what else you kinda realise these guys have seen it all a million times. If there's one piece of advice I can give you it's that you just shouldn't care what the problem is. Let the pros bend you over, give you a diagnosis and finally treatment :) Ok the bending over is lying sideways on the couch, but you can shut your eyes and have a little nap :) If you can accurately describe piles they may not even wish to visually examine you.

I hope you get well soon mate.

I'm down for an op for this, don't mind really if ti hurts like f@ck as long as I'm clear for bowel cancer, which is what I was originally checked out for.
All my life I've wanted to be someone; I guess I should have been more specific.

The only time I have had someone else insert something into my bum was when I had a bleeding pile. I remeber the doctor wrote on the notes after his index finger had been up there "pile at four o'clock"

I was given lactulose fluid and some suppositories - it cleared up after a day or so, but I still have issues.

I have promised myself to get everything sorted this year, healthwise, so am going to get myself booked in for a full M.O.T.

Slightly OT, but in a humourous way, Billy Connolly has some great jokes about doctors and this!:

Go to the docs. They have seen it all before mate.

The supositories seem to work quickest im afraid :(

I had them a while ago and they never came back. Had to change my diet and also stress was not helping.

    Good luck 8)

Eat more fibre, lots of fresh fruit n veg.

Get yourself some anusol or similar and slap it up yer rusty bullet, no need to be ashamed christ we've all had them at one point.

If problems still persists then see your doc.
The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

The fibre thing isnt always true...

As a child I was constipated a lot - parents made me eat lots of fibre, it did nothing more than bloat me out and cause me a lot of embaressing wind  not good when you are at school!!!

i sufered for over 15 years with constiptaion and piles. Now I've been completely free for over a year and have regular normal movements . I found a solution that suits me and might be helpful to others .

Every day i have a bowl of cereal 1/2 normal flakes like special K and 1/2 All Bran . Either for breakfast or supper sometimes both.
I also make sure that I eat at least 1/2 a small can of sweetcorn a day. its easy to put with almost any meal or I add some to a cupasoup for lunch.

That is the minimum roughage I have per day . I'll also eat a bowl of fruit like rasberries, grapes or strawberries etc and lowfat yogurt for a sweet most days.

I try to drink at least 1lt of water a day in addition to other fluids like tea and coffee etc.

Thats it ..nothing difficult .You can devise your own solution

It takes about 4-5 days for your gut to adapt to this so don't expect instant results but I guarantee you'll see results before 1 week is out providing you add this to your diet every day.

I know this is a difficult subject to discuss but it causes such a lot of misery and ill health I think it is worth the slight embarrasesment.
The relief you feel when you pass your first enormous, soft stool with no effort is absolute bliss

Just remember that doctors chose to be doctors and they get paid to do it.

Most embarrassing moment: standing naked from the waist down in a surgery having my bollocks fondled by a 20-something *female* locum. A low point and a high point all in one. :D

My method for dabbling in the "brown arts" was even simpler. 3 WeetBix every morning. Do that for a while and you're sorted.

Ditch Witch! You have boll*cks ??? :?

On constipation: Avoiding constipation is important, and fibre, exercise and proper hydration are key. Lots of fibre without the hydration can even exacerbate the problem as the gut just slows things down to re-absorb the water from the stools, making them harder (and harder to pass). Fruit fibre is less effective than cereal fibre, but a good mixed diet is better than overloading with one type.

On going to the doc's: I am one of the most easily embarrassed about such things, but unfortunately I got colitis - like nothing2seehere I have been prodded and poked where you don't want to be, for several years, culminating with having my colon removed  All the docs and professionals were always "matter of fact" about it all/seen it all before, and after the initial worries I quickly realised it wasn't an issue to be embarrassed about, and I am eternally grateful for the help I got.

On ointments: there is a Germaloids spray that contains hydrocortisone and a local anaesthetic which can be good for settling them down if they are very sore. Available from good chemists. I found this to be best for fast relief.

i hope everyone who has suffered with digestive problems, are ok now(especially all of you,who have kindly replied to my predicament!!!).i have been thinking, and looking at all of your comments, and have come to the conclusion that i do not think it is piles anymore.not trying to be too disgusting, but it is after i go to the loo(it' isn't painful usually!!!)i have these excess nodules of skin at the chocolate starfish(sorry!!!),i always have a bath afterwards,so am clean(i suffer with ocd),but they protrude, and bleed sometimes,so is quite uncomfortable, when riding my bike(although,a nights sleep solves the problem for some reason!!!)sorry to have gone into so much detail, but just wanted to let you know,in more detail,as i didn't explain fully before!!!PHEW!!!

Sounds like piles (what you describe is how piles tend to "work"), could be warts, or just skin tags, but whatever, you need to get the doc to have a peep! In any event there is a "final solution" available via the docs that will be a lot happier than with years of putting up with it.

Alfablue says, what you described does sound like piles.

I understand piles as being like small hernias, which can be caused by straining too much, so they can be a side effect of constipation.

ah so it could still be piles!!!it's just that i do not have any pain with them, that was why i thought they might not be.it's quite confusing, all the different types of problems(that's what doctors are for,i hear you saying  ).
