Just rang my parents who have a Lidl local to them to get me some shoes :)

Got to my local minutes after opening  and came out with shoes, padded leggings (or whatever the correct term is), jacket, jersey and socks. Socks fit better than the running ones I currently use :).

Told bruv and he's going to check it out also. Then he'll need a new bike to match the new purchases

Didn't see any that size in my local (that I recall, anyway). Mind you, mine is a small shop. Try the nearest large store to you. That might be better.

    Cheers.
having tried 44, it was plenty wide enough, but slightly short, I suspect a 45 (if there is such a thing??) me be too roomy, my shallow feet dont fill "normal" shoe shapes.

I'll save up for something else! Good bargains to be had though at Lidl.

Got a pair of 45s as 44s were too narrow. Not used them yet mind. Managed to break a lace on my trainers after trying them on
The jerseys seem okay though unsure about sizing as am an XL in a range that goes upto xxl but XL seems to fit okay.
The fingerless gloves were utter rubbish.

+1 for the gloves. The long sleeved shirt is fine and light. The padded trousers are also quite thin, which could be useful.

The sizing was fairly normal, although the legs seem to be longish? Fantastic value!

Bought a pair of the funny trouser/tights thingies for £8. Bit thin and the padding is very lightweight and stops a bit too soon at the front - like a shelf for the old man to sit on  Looked just too pornographic so ended up putting shorts over them anyway.
Also one of their £2.99 'its a saddlebag no its a rucksack no its a saddlebag' jobs - quite good actually.
What are the shoes like - felt a bit floppy and wasn't sure there was much in the way of cleat clearance - looked to be only about 4 or 5 mm - happy to be persuaded that they're great and a bargain though....?

Oscarbudgie. I bought the funny trouser/tights thingies. I like that it's thin as I can always put something over it. I agree with you on the padding as my Altura ones are much thicker (therefore better for me). The shoes I use without cleats as I have flat pedals.
I love the jacket. Wore mine yesterday evening and it was handy as I was caught in a light shower on the way home from a running club session. As it folds up I've added it to my pannier as a 'always travel with'.

I still want to get 'proper' cycling shoes but I can wait a while. The socks are a great buy and I'll try to find some more this weekend.

Got 2 jerseys, a pair of those track mits and a couple of pairs of socks. Jerseys are great but seem a little on the large side, got them in large and they are pretty baggy so great for commuting but I'd need a medium for a tighter fit for training (if I did any that is  ).

    Socks are good.

The track mits are crap, the ones from Aldi were much better.

I had a look at the jackets but I don't think they are breathable so I reckon I'd be sweating buckets.

@ Cafewanda - maybe you could let us know what the jacket's like after a couple of days use.

any advice on what type of cleats to go with the shoes?

They're SPD compatible shoes so you'd need SPD pedals - cheapest ones I think are about £25. I've never used any of the alternatives to Shimano cleats/pedals so I'm not sure if you could use Crank Bros or Look pedals/cleats

Benno68. You are right. The jacket isn't breathable. I only bought it because it's in my favourite colour :D Also, I can wear it home after a club running session (as long as I'm walking).

I'll try to remember to report back if I remember to wear it whilst cycling.

Couldn't help yourself could you

I think I'll have to invest in a half decent jacket for the winter, unless of course Aldi or Lidl come up trumps with a breathable jacket in the next month or so, you never know.

Went to my local Lidl at lunch time for some shoes (45) but nothing larger than a 43.

Bought a track pump for a fiver. First impressions are quite good.

I know exactly what you mean - Lycra can be revealing at the best of times but the padding on these just pushed everything up and out a little too much for family viewing! Still, bloody good value for money.

I bought a pump at Romford today, they had 3 different types all at £4.99. Pumped my tyres up to 80psi and the thing blew back. Tried it twice and both times it would only get to 80 before it popped out the top. I'll take it back tomorrow and try a different one.

I've seen a couple of reports like this, maybe worth getting a refund. I've got the Aldi version which has been fine so far up to 120psi.

Benno68, I wore my jacket this morning during the rain just so I could report back to you :)

It was ok for most of my journey, but I did have it partially opened as I tend to roast whether I'm wearing a jacket or not. If I'd had arm warmers I wouldn't have worn the jacket, lovely colour though it is :D

Thanks for the report, sounds like it's ok for commuting, and it did the job which is great for the price.

I hope you were going to cycle in anyway, I'd feel sooo guilty if I thought you'd done it just on my account :)

I cycle in regardless of the weather (snow excepted).
  • Bought the tights, jersey and jacket - all good value for money and unusually, they are big enough for me. (Most cycle clothing needs to be 3 or 4 XL to fit me)

Those tights are really long - had to go for L rather than XL.

I bought the shoes last time round and they are ok for commuting, but a bit on the heavy side. Agreed the gloves are rubbish!

The shoes are much worse this time. The sole is very flexible, which kind of defeats the purpose of them. The shoes last time were much much better and I still use them on my day to day commute.

    Avoid.
    Bike/Train commuter: Brompton S2L - "Machete"
12mile each way commuter: '11 Boardman CX with guards and rack
For fun: '11 Wilier La Triestina

I agree with you lardboy. I find these ones slide a lot more on my pedals in the wet (maybe it's time I WTFU and go clipless but I'm scared  ). My previous ones are much better, but these will do for now as a second pair.

My red jacket is my best purchase this time round.
