ok as the name suggests im a runner not a cyclist :) but i am considering making the switch over to duathlons and then triathlons next year and using the winter as a big training period to build up strength in the two new disciplines. now as a runner im already training 4 to 5 times a week and as a teenager i do not have much time (GCSE 's etc.) id probably be training on my own (the cycling club train at the same time as the running club :( ) i think as a maximum i could only be training a maximum of twice a week while im still considering the switch (at this time i do not want to cut down on running) but as a complete newbie i actually do not know where to start :) what sort of training would suit me best as a beginner to competitive cycling, would as with athletics i need to build up a lot of core cycling fitness before specialized training would be beneficial? with the small amount of time i have what would suit me best?

thank you in advance for any advice :)

Yes, I think you need a certain amount of cycling base miles before you do more intense training. Your running fitness will stand you in good stead, but you need to get your muscles used to the different requirements of cycling.

As with any multi-discipline sport, it's a balancing act to get the training volumes right for the swimming, running and cycling. You may well find your running suffers a bit as your cycling fitness improves.
