HR Zone help / basic training plan

Up until now i've been running and cycling without any concern for HR rate zones and whether i'm at an optimal HR for whatever i'm doing so the plan is to get a HRM of some kind.
Once i have this i want to understand what is needed to get the best from it, so is there any websites that are recognised as a trusted resource for information on;

a. Calculating my basic HR zones / ranges
b. Indicating how many sessions a week i should be doing and in what HR zones eg 3 in an upper zone and 1 in a lower zone

Although not overweight (i'm male, 5ft 9in and around 11st 11pound (75kg), medium build) i'd like to lose a bit of fat and generally increase my overall fitness levels therefore ideally i'd be after a training plan to match this desire.
Cheers, Stu

  • Hi I have a CS200CAD and have been following some of the plans on Polar website. No doubt other makes of HRM will have similar plans.[/url]

    There are better but more complicated representations that this but hey it's ok.

    How about averaging 130 bpm for 30 minutes 5 days a week and then building up from there? The answer depends on your fitness, age, how much free time you have etc. and what you feel comfortable with. Start off with a simple plan like that and build up from there. Most on here will have a different idea or opinion but there's some numbers off the top of my head to target fat and you'll come up with a better plan that suits you.

    I'm the cardio type when it comes to exercise but if you're into weights to boost your basal metabolic rate and bulk out then I recommend this website;

    It's a little weird taking advice from a half-naked guy lol, but he gives straight honest advice even though it's too protein-centric for cardio!
