I've ditched the red tyres on my Look and now have black Force/Attack after I saw the light.

I just wish Vittoria did the Open Paves in black. They are my most fave tyre ever.

Skydog, the main hifi is CD, the CD player is better than any Vinyl I've heard (I've heard some top stuff too), not least due to the fact that getting good Vinyl is hard, the better the kit, the more it shows up the deficiencies in the pressing. My CD player was a bottom of the range dCS one, (at £6.5k!), the ones above it are even more astounding.

That said, I have an LP12 in the upstairs system and do enjoy a bit of a spin...

Good move on the tyres (visually at least). 8)

Sounds like you have (two!) nice systems. Mine is split between LP & CD ~ I have a Roksan Xerxes for vinyl and an Arcam for CD played through an Audiolab into PMC's GB1's. It sounds as good as my wallet will allow.

If you go for the Conti 4000s's, I'd be interested to hear how you rate them in comparison to the Vittorias. If you believe all the reviews, they're supposed to be the canines jewels. :o

I had Conti GP 4000S before, I switched to the vittorias on one bike and Conti Force/Attack on the other.

I will not be switching back...

Why do people keep recommending second rate tyres to NapD? He's already got the best, so why would he want to change?

After years of riding contis, I've just switched to the Vittorias. The green is hideous (my bike is blue and white), but they are worth it I think.

Indeed, ugly but awesome (like me! Except I'm not awesome), hence they are staying...
  • Looks like a quality beater, Nap! I don't have the red on my Ti to clash with my green tyres but they are the best tyres BY FAR for winter. I only lost traction once all winter including racing and riding in the snow. You can pick up all black Pave CGs on eBay now and then or the Veloflex Paves are worth a shot.

To all the Pro 3/GP4000S lovers, try some 290TPI tyres (320TPI this winter, wahey!) before succumbing to the visceral reaction to green! They are hosepipes. Not bad but still hosepipes. :-)

    Yes, it's a good deal!

The 2008 model is the same as the 09 model without the ridiculous red paint...

    thank you NapoleonD
    I'm decided
    thanks for your help

the other things i need to find out from them that I don't know:
--what wheels they have on it and what tires
    (any recommendations?)

Plus I need pedals--clipless--any ones you recommend?

    thank you! :)

While we are talking about rubber:

I've been a motorcyclist for quite a while, both on and off road. The problem with Bicycle tyres in my opinion is the lack of feedback or reassurance that you are not about to wash out. Conti Force/Attacks are the best I've tried in both wet and dry conditions, I get the same feeling as when I had decent Motorcycle tyres.I have Michelin Pro 3's on one bike a the moment, they are garbage in the wet.

I have a sneaking feeling if you would have had Force/Attacks on Friday 13th the outcome would have been less severe......

IIRC it should have Fulcrum Racing 1 wheels with Pro 3 tyres.

As for pedals, why not complete the Dura Ace set and get some of them?

I use Look pedals personally but the Shimano ones are good.

    what is "IIRC"?

TIRES: they told me it has Protube tyres (just rechecked my notes)
is that the same as Pro 3 tyres?
I want to have tyres that are reasonably puncture proof.

Will ask about the Fulcrum Racing 1 wheels

PEDALS: and thanks for the tip on the pedals--they suggested Keo classic

Keo classics are fine and good value.

IIRC, IIRC means 'if I remembered correctly' or similar such words...

    Not heard of 'Protube' tyres.

I'd confirm with them the exact spec before buying, let us know what it is before you commit. If they have swapped out some of the parts it may not be such a bargain...

I'd recommend Look pedals...have Keo carbons and Keo Sprints, their both superb...mate has Shimano and has trashed the cleats well quickly...could just be him mind lol....oh and Shimano pedal bearings never seem to last me long...not usual for shimano I know...Look are better :D .

For winter tyres Conti 4 Season or the Ultra's are about as tough / grippy but light as you can get.

All three of mine have Look pedals, Carbons on 1, and Sprints on the other two. They have lasted well with zero issues as have the cleats.

Thanks Turnerjohn That's great. Clearly Look pedals are cool.

And thanks for the recommendation re. the winter tyres. Guess it's a good idea to have at least two pairs--one for winter one for summer/racing

What do you think? Is this good quality stuff? The wheels aren't Fulcrum 1 racing
but the guy said these wheels he has on are very good ...

Would love your take--does it still look like good deal for 3,900?

    SO appreciate your help all

one other thing I thought of:

these tires--michelin pro rac--wondering, will i be getting flats all the time? from what I have read it seems they aren' t very forgiving. what might I request in place of the micehline pro race that would enable me to ride without fear of flats? thanks :)
  • If they're Pro 3 Race they're supposed to be pretty reasonable WRT punctures - review. Conti GP 4 Seasons as an alternative?

Yep, good wheels them, pretty good spec except for the stem which is bobbins. You must purchase, but ask them to put a good stem on it like a Thomson X2 instead. For free.
  • One of my colleagues commuted in this morning on his Siena. Nice bike. Hope you enjoy it Napoleon!
