About another 38 countries.

so we should all believe the reports we are given then hmmmmm
i wonder if Al Jazeera report the same stories????
Do you think they'd be any more reliable than the reports we get? You're quite right that just because the Gov. says something it doesn't necessarily make it so, but that doesn't mean the contradictory story is necessarily true either.0 -

I learnt it from finding out how the world works.
I'm disappointed that this thread has degenerated into a slanging match with the usual Soapbox type point scoring. Of course you're entitled to your opinions, but the young men and women who Frank started the OP about have given their lives in defense of your freedom to express yourself.
I think you should show them some respect .0 -

Call me soft if you like but I was watching the news coverage of the re-patriation of the servicemen and I couldn't help but cry.
I don't know if it's the fact my children are 23 and 20 and these poor souls are younger than them. It just SEEMS such a waste.
Sorry.Tail end Charlie

Sorry.
You're not soft - I've cried at less than that before - like saying goodbye to a beloved and faithful bike.
But anyway, onto the waste and back to Afghanistan. I suggest that anyone interested in this subject reads a decent book on recent Afghan history. It's a highly complex issue, but can be briefly (and over-simplistically, but this is a forum posting not a thesis) summed up by saying that the USA and USSR used Afghanistan as one of their Cold War battlegrounds - the USSR wanted to support their ally in the Afghan government, and the USA deliberately provoked the USSR into invading by supporting mujahideen BEFORE the Soviet invasion.
It is especially shameful that the USA, along with the UK and several other powers gave so much help to Islamic fanatics, and having paid the price (Islamic terrorism), inflicted even more misery on the Afghan people than they had already suffered. The calls for other NATO countries to "do more" to solve a problem that was not of their own making are pathetic. Why should countries which are entirely blameless have to clear up the problems created by the USA/UK/China/Pakistan?
And to think, the people that created this mess (US and Soviet) will be multi-millionaires living a life of luxury and power, while innocent Afghan citizens and NATO troops are being slaughtered. :x
This subject cannot be done justice on an Internet forum, and there are excellent books available on the subject in public libraries and bookshops. In the meantime, here's a bit of light reading - not too heavy on detail, but a good outline:
