Biting bugs on the trail

I just come back off a 90 minute blast after work. I met up with a mate and after about 30 minutes we noticed a large fly that had attached itself to my arm. I brushed it off and noticed I began to bleed so it was obviously having a bit of a meal at my expense. I have noticed them before on my legs. I dont feel anything so I have to keep regularly checking.
What are they? Thare about half an inch in length, a drab brown colour and quite fat. I thought they were horse flies but apparently not.

I got attacked by one of these, deceivingly vicious from their appearance...

They bite the sh*t out of me and they itch like crazy for days too0 -
It was a stable fly.
Heres the little bastard

Apparently they fly around where theres livestock. There were sheep/cows around so I guess they buzzing around them but found me more appetising.
Only females bite to suck blood. Figures.0 -
Perhaps it was a horse fly that bit you? Search on Google images for photos.0

It was prettier than paul daniels. Maybe even debbie mcgee.
The info I can find on the stable fly says not to be confused with horse fly, which hurt when they bite you0 -

Both the horse fly and the stable fly are known to bite! I am not sure if Paul Daniels and Debbie McGee are known to do so!0 -
I've seen a horse fly...Claud Bulter Cape Wrath D27 (2009)

I've seen a cow.GENESIS CORE 200

I've not seen one since i broke up with my ex
Apparently horse flys are bigger and make a loud noise when flying around. Stable fly is more subtle.0 -
This thread is awesome.
You gotta watch out for those Paul Daniels' though. Vicious little ankle biters they are. Mostly roam in packs and come out at night to forrage for cats.0 -
Not to be confused with their more agressive cousin, the lesser spotted David Blaine
Damn magicians on the trails, something should be done!0 -

Yeah you don't want a magician appearing as if from out of nowhere right in front of you when you are blasting downhill unless it is David Blaine!
The less that David Blaine is spotted, the better in my view! His whole act seems to come down to the same thing-standing or sitting in the same area for long periods of time wtf how boring!! Well ok so the card tricks he does are cool but not the being frozen in a block of ice type stuff!?! Blaine's next stunt should involve him putting on a straight jacket then being chained up and jumping into water and attempting to free himself-lets hope someone remembers the cement boots!
What an odd thread this has turned into!0 -

Which may not sound extrodinary, but the sheep was driving a car at the time0 -
