Roadies - are you allowed to do any other sports?!

Seems a lot of roadies are very single minded in the pursuit of roadie perfection.

Do you guys do anything else for fun?!

I MTB ride a lot, trail run (and race), recently took up triathlon racing (only one so far - all off road/in the sea), surf a lot (me in my avatar), do some weights, bit of waterskiing behind our little boat, look after our little boy (9 months old) and errmmm work sometimes too...:lol:

How about you lot?

Will this attract abuse? Probably :lol:

which is ironic when 99% of the forum membership is probably made up of leisure and hobby cyclists..

Nothing wrong with being single minded though - I used to be and I know plenty of MTBers who are the same...

Anyway, to answer the question, I also ride MTB (local trails = Brechfa, Nant yr Arian) and motocross...

Do a bit of running in Winter and run a cross country league, play tennis with my kids, still play the odd game of football and I'm looking for a MTB to do a bit of that - not racing just getting out on a few trails.

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.

Used to play a lot of league squash, but that has had to go on hold as I'm waiting for a shoulder operation.

I'm looking forward to being able to play again! :D

Used to run when I was off the bike, but I found I was a) getting bored, and b) injuring myself.

If I had the time, I'd like to start swimming again. I'll probably have to wait until the kids are a bit older and start taking them to the local pool. Surf-Matt, with a little boy of your own, how on earth do you find the time to do all that??!!
Making a cup of coffee is like making love to a beautiful woman. It's got to be hot. You've got to take your time. You've got to stir... gently and firmly. You've got to grind your beans until they squeak.
And then you put in the milk.

Did martial arts for 17yrs, used to teach it too. Family commitments/shifts/road cycling put a stop to it. I don't really miss it but it has been useful at work.
    Also do MTB.

Used to do a lot of weight training (needed at work at the time due to the dept I was in) but since I left that I stopped as I found weight training was useless for anything other than lifting heavy weights!

Been playing a fairly high standard of tennis until about a year ago, before taking a break to concentrate on the cycling. Family and kids don't allow for everything so something had to give. At least for now.

Also done a little weight training and running, although really don't like running at all.

I just cycle, spend too much time doing that to do any other sports.

I ride on the road (TTing) in the summer, but switch to 'cross between September and February. Also recently bought a mountain bike for off-road training (so that the 'cross bike doesn't get too bashed about) which is proving good fun.

Mountain Bike, no thanks. There is only one type of pure riding for me and thats the road! Next you will be asking if I would consider buying Shimano !

Due to a joint condition, I'm actually not allowed to do any other sports (except maybe swimming). I still do occasionally though.

Running (off road/fell if at all possible), and weights now and again for me. I've also recently started playing basketball again, but years of slow-twitch endurance sports mean I can no longer dunk :( I used to row and I'm on the lookout for an indoor rower for the winter too. Much as I love road cycling, I don't think I could do just that for long; I do like to be all-round fit.

We (me and Mrs Matt) run a PR company from home - we share the workload and get freelancers in to do a fair bit of it too. It works well and we get plenty of free time :D Plus we are both pretty into outdoor activities.

Napolean - any particular MA? Did karate to brown belt when I was a nipper then kickboxing for 6 years - ended up teaching (more the exercise part) and competed nationally - and did okay. Flipping knackering (competing) though.

Used to weight lift a lot and gained three stone in 18 months (from 9.25 to 12.25 stone) in my early 20s but trimmed it down a bit - got a bit bulky for surfing, running and the like. Still "overweight" (just) according to BMI but under 10% fat so can't exactly lose more (and don't want to) without using power tools and limb removal. Just do maintenance weights twice a week now to keep things ticking over -reckon it helps "balance" your muscles and prevents injury - of you're sensible.

Used to do a bit of mtb, but wife got fed up with my trips to A&E and I got fed up with having to drive to trails to ride. I struggle to find enough time for road riding, so nothing else for me at the moment. Have played a bit of footie on the xbox tho...

Just cycling now, used to play football, Badminton and Basketball regularly. Stopped when I realised that any slightly off kilter landing had me rolling around on the floor clutching either ankle and out of any sport for the next month. Used to swim a lot when I was a kid, so I went back a few years ago, hhmm a slow lane a medium lane and a fast lane, well I havent swum for a while (over 20 years) so I go in the medium lane. Did 2x25 meter lengths and got in the slow lane  . Did 8 lengths in total, got out unable to lift my arms and havent ever been back, sod that

B2B stuff almost exclusively. Nice mix of public sector and private clients - so far the recession hasn't been an issue. So far...

Same line of work as you?

yes - all b2b, mainly tech related. Although less pure PR these days and more general marketing consultancy type stuff......
