when an early start to a long ride is close?

I have a 180 miler on Sunday and I have to get up about 4am and set off at half 5 and cycle 18 miles to the start, now I could just think well I'll go to sleep extra early like 7-9pm, but I just cant get to sleep that early no matter how hard I try, around 11-12 I manage to, so if I forced myself to wake up on saturday morning about 3-4am would you reckon I'd be tired by 9pm?

To be honest all of the sprotives this year I've had to get up at 4/5am to then travel in a car for a few hours to get to the sprotive start, to then ride 100 odd miles.

In all honesty I find 1 late night makes little or no difference.
So long as you get good sleep in the run up, the ealrly start makes little difference.
Just eat loads and maybe have some extra caffeine!

Than never to have loved at all."

I find one night/day of very little sleep doesn't make much difference. The excitement of the event will carry you through during the big day, but I find I'll be very tired next day.

That being said, if I've got a long important race early Sunday then I'll try to be in bed by 9 on Saturday. Ideally, I'll try to go to bed on 9 at Friday as well to get into some sort of pattern.

By the way that's the biggest thing I hate about racing and the reason I don't race too much, the early to bed on Sat/Sun is not good socially.

It'd probably not bother me too much at one time but since having problems with sleeping the day before an event last year I ended up doing it on 2 hours sleep and I had 0 energy.

As you are "only" doing 300km it won't make a great deal of difference.

If you want to, you could get early nights for several days that week to get rid of your "sleep debt". But I am guessing that you will be finished before you start to really feel sleepy anyway

End of May I did an audax ride around Devon/Cornwall. Day one started at 5am from my house and ended at Bude 2.30am the following day. I took every possible measure to prevent myself falling asleep while riding.
