The material at the back of my shoes has started to peel away from the heel of my shimano RO85 road shoes I've had the shoes for 9 months. I think its time I got a new pair.

I have road shoes and Shimano SPD-sl pedals. I don't want to spend huge amounts (£40 or so). But I don't want to get the DHB shoes. What road shoes should I get for commuting? I plan to get more expensive lighter shoes for the weekend at a later date.

What's wrong with the DHB shoes? I've got a pair and they're fine

The DHB shoes are absolutely fine, always get great reviews, I even don't mind the look of them. I just don't want them.

You sure? Whenever i buy Specailized I feel it should involve, in someway, a Specialized bike.

I have no problem with DHB as a brand, I own their shades and bib 3/4 lengths. Perfectly fine. Just don't want the shoes. I'll probably end up buying the shoes.... urgh.

Well you certainly haven't come up with a good reason not to and at that price range they are perhaps the best you can get....

I bought the cheapo Pearl Izumi ones for commuting, frankly they're rubbish, then again they're kinda sacrificial in as much as I only wear them for short rides and don't mind if they get trashed.

I think i'd probably go DHB next time though - never heard a bad word against them.

Ah! A language I can understand. So, which Specialized shoe are you speaking about. Or should I speculate (as one should never assume) that you are refering to all Specialized shoes.

Pearl Izumi and they're alright, but not partic an improvement on the DHB.

Go on, don't listen to the label tart.... Lower yourself...DHB, DHB, DHB, DHB....

Ooooh oooh I have a bad word... but I'm not going to use it.

The DHB road shoes I had (M1 I think) were very cheap and completely rubbish. They alleged to be stiff road shoes, but were, in fact, bendier than my sandals.

To throw a few more brands in, I do really like my Mavic Avenir Storm Trooper shoes, and my Northwave Aerlite 3s, although the Northwaves are a little roomy for my bony man-feet.

The point is that I'm a Pinarello riding tart & Pinarello make shoes that match my bike, yet I choose to buy Specialized and have done for several years. Why, 'cos they're so damn good....

    You see my point?

OK, well to be honest I've never spent more than £40 on shoes and have the DHB and the aforementioned Pearl Izumi. Never tried Specialized so you win, if you insist...

  • I ordered DHB road shoes from Wiggle but alas one of the screw weaves was missing from the cleat holes on the bottom - returned them for a refund so can't comment on performance but think hey looked a bit plasticky (sp?). Nonetheless, I'm sure they would fine for every day communting.

I ended plumping for twice the price Spesh BG Road Elite and they have been excellent:

The Spesh BG shoes are super comfortable, very well made and reasonably priced. The former is the key thing here - honestly, I don't mind wearing them all day (admittedly the MTB version but they're all designed on the same lines). And they do look nice - DHB look rubbish and those Pearl Izumi shoes look like they come from one of those no-name cheap shoe warehouses that never has any brand you've heard of.

    I'm on the spec bandwagon.
I already have 2 mtb specific pairs, the better pair being the Pro set with carbon soles and ratchet fastening.

They are very good so much so that I'm going to get the s works road version soon.

I visited specialised concept centre in ruislip west London on Wednesday to try some out. They tested my foot for suitable sole insert to discover that I had been using the wrong profile insert for the last year because my LBS hadn't checked this when I bought my last pair.

Even so they are still very good but come at a price.
