  • Evening,

Just came across this thread, did you ever manage to meet up for a ride? If so do you mind if I tag along for the next meet?

    thunderfield grove rocks
  • Never been in Thunderfield Grove. Just looked up the names of the woods and i see this one is closer to me so will give it a try.

I normally go through Derry and Wormley woods over to Cowheath where you go up a steepish bit and then throw a left which takes you through the wood then along the edge of broxbourne would until you come out at the bottom of the original hill.

Its good over there but i find it get muddy over there very easily.

Also I see people try to put a few things out and over little streams but kids must go over and boot it all about. Just wondered if you guys have encountered this.

So went over there this weekend, spent probably 50% of my time pushing the bike through the copious thick mud:

    My bike got stuck!

The mud in Hertfordshire is just special.

By this time of year, I'm so so sick of it.

    Hurry up summer!
  • ^^ lol i feel your pain, i tried to go out in my lovely cleaned bike....

wasnt pretty sight, i seen so many quad bikers around the motocross style bikes it been shocking the condition around brox woods as of late.

really wish we get a very hot summer to dry that mud..

Pleased to report it's improved hugely with all the good warm weather recently, still needs flattening out in places, but overall my 16 mile route in the woods was pretty mud free.
  • 16 mile

where do you go route wise, im sure my route isnt that long, though it can take a few hours to do.

It's kind of round the outside and then through the middle, but I'll switch on CycleMeter next time I'm going and send the data up to google maps.
  • please do , allways like to know different routes around brox woods/ 8)

nearly got hit by quad bike other day.....

by the way keep a look out for fly tippers they have been dumping along the roman road a lot recently in broad daylight, i was told theres a reward if you can get information that leads to prosecution

Where would people recommend to ride in this area, just moved to welwyn garden and i'm looking for a few good places that are a little closer than chicksands (which I like) and the further south areas of swinley and surrey. Kind of after nice little trails with jumps and fun sections that you can easily play around on.
  • HI welcome 8)

Brox woods is a pretty good place though recently havnt been able to go down due to bike wanting a service and being very needy for my attention

Tbh i start from the Olde roman road at the top of goose green (i come from lord street and go upto goose green past the pub to get there)

From there you can go down the roman road till you get to bottom where you can turn right into the wood and from there plenty of different places to go around.

You can in brox wood get to a point where theres a fence that is open for you to do into the main broxbourne reserve area(it gravel path and big fern trees with statues of wied looking things....dont ride there a night it pretty freaky seeing a woodern roman standing there  )

once you in there you can go straight to the car park which i believe is called East broxbourne,

Once you in car park you follow the road (straight forward out of car park) which then leads you to a a T juntion which if you take the right, then follow will lead you to what is called West broxbourne.

Bassically you now have found Wormley woods.

In wormley woods you can get plenty of different rides,

All in all i recommend a OS map, as it has all the woods listed .

Easly get a good 1-2+hours there, and i possible to get to epping woods from broxbourne, and Epping Woods is HUGE, though you really do need a guide to show you around .

    hope this helps

Here's this mornings route, few miles short of 16, but I live in Cheshunt and didn't start the GPS until I got to Wormley.

I still need to learn my way around the woods to the south.
  • you missed out a lot of the wormley bits,

the area you covered was mainly the brox woods which is pretty good, but the best stuff id say is around wormley with some woodern bridges some of the bikers have made makes for some good singletrack.

Theres also a route which i actually went down by mistake which easly some of the best singletrack i been on for a long time, better in some places than epping :D

but sinse then i cant seem to remember where it was, hopefully il get lost again and end up there :P

I know where you mean now!

I've played around Bencroft Woods, so I just need to carry on through, I've been through there once, but it was a peeing down with rain so I was just in fear of death down the hills with all the gloopy mud and ended up just north of Goffs Oak.

Will go have an investigation on Friday and see if I can increase my route distance significantly, I really should buy an OS map for the area.

Heading into Bencroft/Wormley woods tomorrow just after lunch, if anyone is interested.
  • OS map is kinda a must tbh :)

Atm bike needs some really bad TLC so havnt been around there for a while:(

I find that wormley has the better singletrack stuff while brox woods has quite a nice downhill section which you can blaze down quite fast untill you hit roman road or a deer...

I've just ordered a laminated OS Map for the area, should be here in the next week. :D

I had a trip round Wormley Woods on Friday and found some excellent downhill from the 4-5 miles mark, definitely going to add that to my route, even though I have to go back uphill the same way I went down, missed out the centre bit, so there's plenty of new stuff for me to explore.

Visited Thunderfield Grove today, there are some great runs in there, but it's a little too small to have any real flow and there are a lot of fallen trees on the paths.

I'm just getting back into mtb now after a 5 year break ( usual thing work, kids etc ) I always used to ride broxbourne woods and loved night rides through there, I live on the cheshunt side of the woods and although I'm still doing the tow path thing to get my fitness up I would love to meet up with anyone interested for the odd weekend hack in the future. Does anyone know if there is a local club or regular meet to ride the woods
    Many thanks

I'm thinking of heading into the woods after work today if anyone is free or about, no idea of whereabouts to go but I may try those fun little dh sections mentioned above, I don't fancy getting lost trying to find bits though
  • Im looking for people to ride with.

Im looking to head to Broxbourne/Wormley woods each Monday & Wednesday. There is a good pub in Brickendon the Farmers boy which quite a lot MTB's stop at.
