I was cycling back from work today and some guy in non cycing gear and on a single speed overtook me. UP A HILL
To make matters worse he rubbed it in by saying "you looked good".
In defense i tried to say "gone a lot further than you" but in reality i probably hadn't. I had had a few drinks though which always makes my legs feel heavy for some reason but still......
He turned off strait away and i almost followed him for the sake of my pride but thought, he's only got one gear there's no pride to be clawed back from that :(
Anyway needed to vent the shame somewhere and where better :( :(

Willhub, the point is he had 1 gear, if he was on a geared bike he, obviously, would leave me for dead in any situation :?

If he was not just having a joke, then my comment still stands, or do you and everyone else tell someone they're crap when you cycle past them on a climb or even on the flat? Cause I sure dont.

"You looked good" sounds like it's calling someone crap, in other words, he thought he was good, but on overtaking that opinion changed, so he decided to say, you looked good.

As good as calling someone crap.
Thought you were calling me a retard

Eh. no, I've re read my post and don't get how it makes out it sounds like I'm calling you the retard?

The guy who overtook you is one for calling people crap just cause he's faster. I don't cycle past people and say "you're crap", or "I thought you where good" or "you looked good" or anything like that, all it does is either piss them off and get abusive themselves or makes them feel crap and to some people put pressure on the train more or harder.

Yea he might have been pushing hard, just not showing it on his face, by the time he got to the top he might have being taking it really slowly whilst he recovered.

He didn't go to the top, where he turned off was flat/slightly down hill. Wasn't even a quarter way up the hill.
Was guing to do a time trial tomorrow but think i'll give it a couple more months none the less. Train harder that is the moral to this tale

Oh yes and regularly check to see whats sneaking up behind, also no drinkies before cycling... :)

The fact that he turned off straight away would probably mean he'd cooked himself. If you see him again, and he says "You looked good", just tell him "Sorry, I'm not gay but thanks for the compliment"
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos

I can top that. A few years back I was finishing a ride round Lanashire and was coming through Bolton. I was proper knackered and just had one little hill to get over on my way to Westhaughton, nothing major just a stinger. I passed some kids on bikes near the bottom and carried on grinding over to the top of it. As I got to the top THREE of the kids came past me  Talk about embarrassed. All I could say was "try riding 70 miles then do that", but it was VERY embarrasing.

If some kids came past me I'd have to just put everything into it get past them, even though I'd risk blowing myself up, I'd not need to with an adult as they'd realize after 70 miles it'd be hard, but kids think they're invincible and can go on forever.

Yeah, unfortunately I was at the top of the hill so there was no chance to take them back. They just stopped and celebrated. No respect these kids today, that's what I say!

If I had a penny for every time some cyclist came by me I'd be on my way to rich.
Some say hello, some say nothing, one complimented me on having great calf muscles,
some say "on your left" (right if you're English - or is it British). No big deal. People come by you - you go by people. I've even been passed by GIRLS.

Cheers all, feel better, i love you guys :D
Plan is, go harder further ,faster ,longer. To be fair he could have swooped in from aside hill with momentum and turned off. He might have been genuine with his comment but my paranoia got the better of me. But that is my problem and definately a good memory to keep as a training aide :D

FWIW you can't keep ahead of them all. I think more than a few riders just can't stand the thought of someone in front of them and spend lots of their rides trying to catch and pass people. I guess they think that means they win.

dont worry STEFANO, ive only met 2 commuters on the end of a ride, passing me on a cycle path and said nothing. one was on a touring bike with panniers and other was on some city bike. anyways its great fun exercise to see how long you can stay with them.

It's 'fixed gear humour'. Or sarcasm to you and me.

May not have been fixed though - if it really was a single speed, that's much much worse. Embarrassing, actually.

Was it really such a good idea to post this, Stefano?
Making a cup of coffee is like making love to a beautiful woman. It's got to be hot. You've got to take your time. You've got to stir... gently and firmly. You've got to grind your beans until they squeak.
And then you put in the milk.

Define the word RETARD please Freehub ?

I have 2 sons with Autism who have been referred to as Retards, so please explain.

This word is used too casually.

That's nothing. I was cycling to work in Slovakia one time, when a farm worker in his 50s on what must have been a 30-year old bike came up behind me. He had a cigarette in one hand and a pint of beer in the other (and this was at about 6.30 in the morning). I got up a fair speed, maybe 18 mph (that's good on the bike I had out there), and carried on for a few hundred yards. When I turned around he was still behind me, still smoking and drinking. So I went up through the gears, I was probably doing about 20-22mph, just could not get rid of him. Luckily for me he turned off to the field he worked in after a few miles.

So the moral of the story is that labouring on a farm will do you more good than cycling ever will.
