I don't wear a helmet 'cos i sweat

I sweat -a lot -when I am riding. And no,I am not 25 stone or just starting out on two wheels. I like to think it is because of the energy I expend when riding?!

But this creates a problem - that I feel at my best with no headwear and just wiping the sweat away with a gloved hand. I have tried a helmet and it drove me insane. But I would quite like to wear one as I came off about 20 years ago and the first thing that hit the tarmac was my swede, requiring a trip to the A+E.

I realise that other riders must sweat AND wear helmets. So how do you stop it running down your face?

You can wear a sweatband under your helmet which can help. Personally, I just wear the helmet and put up with sweat running down my face :-)

I use an Assos Summer headband - sorts the same problem out for me

There are a number of the helmet activists who feel this is a reasonable excuse when it suits their agenda.

You have a free choice - wear a helmet or not as you wish

I bought a sweatband but it's a bit thick, I'm going to try a girls headband from superdrug or something, I don't want to pay £11 for an Assos band.

Will give the headband a try then.

Any recommendations for a helmet? Current one is a middle of the road Specialized. Not comfy at all. Am thinking about a Giro. Any comments on these?

Giro helmets don't pass the Snell B90 or B95 tests

I have always had the same issue. Didn't wear a helmet until about 2 years ago and after a couple of falls decided to put up with the sweat. I always wore a cap under my helmet, which worked ok until it was fall of sweat, but it was the best I could find.

Earlier this year I did the Cheshire Cat and Kilotogo gave away a free buff. This works brilliantly. Normally I fold it in half and wear it like a bandana, thing is that because its so thin it's not too bulky. I can wear thicker or thinner by spreading it further up my head or folding it down. During the winter I can use it to cover the whole head for warmth too! Not had any sweat problems since I got that. :D

Defo recommend a buff. I had it on today and with the good weather it even dried out at the cafe stop because it is so thin.

I wear a "trade cap" under the helmet. It soaks sweat up and when it becomes drenched the beads of sweat tend to drip off the peak, away from my face. Also keeps "mini-beasts off me nut.

I'm using a Giro Stylus at the minute, retails at about 35 quid I think. Very comfortable, very light, lets the air through well, and after riding in 28 degrees yesterday round Northumberland and up the Ryals in the Cyclone, seems to stop the sweat from running down as well, but may work even better with the headband.

Wear a buff under the helmet. If its uncomfortable, then just carry the buff and use it only when you start sweating. In hot, humid countries you'll find nearly all riders do this (I was in Taiwan recently and local riders seemed to consider it quite odd that I didn't use one).

You could try a bandana. I have a Craft Pro Cool, which is brilliant - keeps my bonce at a nice temperature, keeps insects off and protects my thinning pate from the sun.

Another vote for the buff. If you're worried about them being hot they make a cool max version now and it was fine for me in South Africa in 30degC+.

I sweated buckets yesterday but my helmet seemed to help stop sweat running down from my head. Maybe it's just the design.....

I have a sweat gutr. Great thing which channels the sweat away from the eye line.

Good to know I'm not the only one with the problem.
I will try some recommendations to see if they work for me.
Otherwise the knotted handkerchief might have to come out. Can't decide between polka dot or yellow tho'.

+1.7 trillion. Buff is the way forward, if you haven't tried one then do it!
  • Buff wearers - I have one for mountain climbing, never tried it on the bike...

Out of interest, how do you wear your buff under your helment...?

    Bandana Style? Headband? Sahariane?

Sorry - but what is a 'buff'?

Pirate style. Reason being that any sweat that is absorbed into the material on your forehead then moves across the top of your head by osmosis and is quickly evaporated. Mid ride (at a cafe stop or something) I sometimes switch it around by moving the slipknot along a bit so the 'tail' becomes the forehead part and vice versa.

Pirate style for me too. If its cold then maybe another method to 'double up' material. Its also effective when not wearing a helmet, sometimes I just wear it like that under my cap. I like to think it makes me look all rascally and Pantini-ish, but in reality I probably look like someone at the seaside with a knotted multi-coloured handkerchief on me 'ead.

on hot rides in Australia i would put some Vaseline above my eyebrows to channel the sweat around my eyes. a marathon runner taught me this trick.
never wear anything under the helmet - head is warm enough as it is and it restricts the effectiveness of the ventilation design

Ah, I should be so lucky - we don't have that problem much round here, if you do somehow manage to work up a sweat it's usually frozen before it gets in your eyes.

for those who find buffs / headbands too thick in the helmet (oo-err) I say; when you next buy a helmet, try them on in the shop with the buff on. I need to go 1/2 to one size up to get the buff underneath. Of course for those with helmets already this is little help, sorry

I am bald *and* sweaty and solve this with a buff or an old school cotton hankey worn Harley style (fold diagonally, roll 1" strip over once, tie round head with loose corner tucked in behind. For summer (when the buff is a bit thick and hot), Decathlon sell a really thin buff type thing for about 2 quid. It doesn't soak up as much sweat as a proper buff but lets airflow better(rer).

  • smear some vaseline into your eyebrows, it'll divert the sweat.
