It's been lurking in the blue sky above recently.

Anyone know WTF it's gone? :?

I wish. I just looked out the window. I distinctly remember putting sun cream on this morning before I left the house.

I thought this was going to be a thread about Lance Armstrong... (but that would be in poor taste)

then I looked out the window and understood - I can report the sun missing in Bristol too.

The Sun, which is a star, is in fact not a ball of fire. Fire as we understand it cannot survive in the vacuum of Space. The Sun, is - for want of a better term - a giant ball of plasma. As are all stars.

Sorry just cleared that (the above) up for you.

I'm using an English keyboard with English text. I'm not opening Microsoft Word to change Uber to Uber-with the dots above the 'U', copy and paste it onto Bikeradar so that I can spell Uber properly. That is monumentally Anal!

Hence the Germans adopting Ueber for those to lazy to find the one with the 'dots above' (called an Umlaut for crying out loud!).

Certainly the big round yellow thing is missing in the Midlands today, much nicer riding in this morning as I could keep on it that bit longer before getting too hot!

    WTF is a Umlaut?

I don't want to spell it Ueber, it lacks the effect of 'uber'. At least people know what I mean by Uber and understand the limitations of my keyboard....

And the yellow thing is arguably not even yellow. Something that hot can't be yellow surely it should be white with (light being bent) and/or the distance the light has to travel as it slows being changed to yellow. The colder/older the Sun gets the darker it'll become in relation to the distance the light has to travel to the person looking at it.

    - I may have made all of the above up. But it sounds right.

Was dots above letters a vogue like back in the day where people had hyphen's in their names or when people started naming their children after things: Apple, Zelda (after the Nintendo game) Paris, Prince, AK47, ASBO....

Light slowing? Don't let Einstein hear you say that. Usually its something to do with the way your eyes work, or photon scattering (which is why the sky appears blue).

my little sister (all 6ft or so of her) has a Umlaut as Chloë.

Wouldn't an umlaut mean her name was pronounced something like Chloer (i.e. like the drink Schloer)?

Surely the diacritic above the e of Chloë is a diaeresis. Same as the one in Zoë, Brontë, reënter, and so on. It's not an umlaut because it doesn't change the sound of the vowel but it's a diaeresis because it means that the vowel is pronounced independently of the preceeding letter?

My work is done. Thank you and goodnight. :P
Never be tempted to race against a Barclays Cycle Hire bike. If you do, there are only two outcomes. Of these, by far the better is that you now have the scalp of a Boris Bike.

If all types of light travel at a single constant speed, it would only have a singular form.

However, light acts as both particles and waves. It travels faster in one form than the other. That is why it is able to do so.

Edit: To add; Waves travel at different speeds (think Sound waves, which can be slow or fast). Light in the form of waves are no exception to the rule.

The speed of light depends on the medium through which it travels.

When it travels through the north circular, for example, it appears to slow to a complete stop.
