62mph on a road bike

Bear in mind, most of us could go faster! pro cyclists are light: downhill, weight dominates just as much as uphill – but this time, to your advantage. There's no great skill required to stay upright on that road at those speeds; the video shows it to be generally straight with gentle corners.
I've not found many hills in France that are steep enough to go so fast on, I may hunt this out if I'm ever in the area. The prevailing mountainous road on the continent is switchbacked, unlike the UK where roads tend to go straight up big hills. I wonder what the historical reasons for this difference are?0 -
that sounds nasty bobtbuilder
..suppose its a nice story tell the grandkids in future :oops:0 -
I recently crashed at 44mph. Not nearly my fasted descent, but it was with a strong tail wind which, when I hit a 90 degree turn, stood me up and I couldn't hold my line. All things considered, I crashed pretty well. A chipped tooth, 10+ stitches and a cracked shoulder blade. The thing that upset me most was I shattered my steering tube and cracked my chainstay. I was back on a bike (not that one mind you) within 2 weeks!0

I wish I hadn't opened this thread. I came bombing down here:

this morning doing about 50mph. It's straight, and there was no traffic but the thought did pop into my head that if a dog walked out into the road I might end up eating through a straw for a while... :shock:Head Hands Heart Lungs Legs0 -

The descent in question is arrow-straight for 3/4 mile then bends right. I have ridden it loads of times, but this time there was a scattering of gravel at the corner, and as I steered the front wheel turned too far, throwing me over the bars in a summersault.
I landed upside down in a hedge. Only one cleat disengaged, and the top tube hit me full in the left testicle! The next day it was the size of a large lemon. Went to the Doctor's who told me that it had filled with blood from internal bleeding! He told me to "rest" for 2 days, to see if it drained naturally, otherwise it would have to be drained in hosipital. Luckily, it drained naturally, but I still couldn't stand up or walk around without "cupping" the affected area for about 5 days. The Doctor explained that this was because "dangling" was causing more tearing and bleeding.
On top of this, I had to call in sick and explain this. When I got back to work, my whole team of 30 people knew. I got called John Wayne for months.
You got off lucky I guess, imagine if that hedge was not there!0 -

What is it with 44mph??0 -

I got 50mph for the first time today, was awesome, I'll be doing 60mph on the same stretch some day.0 -
Where did I say I don't believe someone? I think you need to re-read what I've put.
And where did I say I can do 60mph?
:roll:0 -
Will said he didn't trust some computers, he also said he reckons he could do 60 some day.
Maybe Will didn't see that it said km/h?0 -
There is a fell road which I regularly ride where I descend at 60mph. I just enjoy the speed and pray that a sheep doesn't step out on the road! The climb is evil though.0

Today a sheep stepped out in the road in front of me, luckily it was going uphill0

We hit 46 on the CC (with no real effort) on Napoleon's road - horid little bends hear and there at the bottom of some of those hills in that area - nearly glided gently (slowing down braking) into the hedge at the bottom of one of them - just had enough braking power to make the turn (don't know the roads or area).0

My fastest so far is 57.8 mph on Dartmoor, i must admit the speed is one of the main reasons i cycle. I have to agree that weight makes a difference as I am 18 stone and have no trouble reaching 50 mph plus!!0

Started to get a bit of bottle back today, managed to get over 30 mph but I was constantly on the brakes. I used to get up to about 50 on the same stretch of road...0

Welcome to my world
If you find out how to get your bottle back, share the secret!0 -
I'm just riding the similar roads on which I crashed and I am getting faster. I don't think I'll ever be the same though.
Before this week I was usually going faster on the flat than I was downhill!0 -
All these high speed crashes makes mine at 38mph seem totally feeble. Still hurt.
THe road I was on was as straight as any, and I'd been down it many times before. Also other more testing descents at up to 45mph while riding here and in France.
But, now I have a hesitation going bck up to speed and have yet to exceed 35mph. They say you learn more from your mistakes as you get older, and take less risks.
At 52 I expect to see a lot more risks before my time is up. Maybe. There's no such thing as too old.0
