Saw Star Trek and thought it was pure awesome. I loved Zachary Quinto and the Spock character overall.

Hopefully they will recast Scotty by the next film - fingers crossed for Frankie Boyle!

Saw Star Trek last night and got to say I enjoyed it. Never been a Trek fan so know comparatively little about the Universe, but as sheer popcorn entertainment I couldn't really fault it, aside from absurd usage of deus ex machina - par for the course in Sci Fi I 'spose. Looks like a "rebooted" franchise that will run and run.

Hmmm, main reason I wanted to see it was for Simon Pegg as Scotty - I've been a fan of his stuff since Spaced.

The bad reports on him as Scotty are putting me off...

    He doesn't make many appearances...

Took the kids to see it on Sat evening. They loved it. I quite* enjoyed it too, truth be told.

I think Quinto's voice is a bit thin and reedy for Spock, and he hasn't yet got the cool detachment and poise that Spock has. Chris Pine could have been more like Kirk by mimicking the craZY INtonATion that ShatNER used to dePLOY. Probably best he didn't though.

Karl Urban as Bones was fecking spot on though. Uncanny.

*I say "quite" because as a purist Trekkie I'm not so keen on the whole alternate-reality-thing-allows-the-producers-to-rewrite-history-in-the-next-N-films idea.

As Jash says, he's not got a big part (just as Scotty in the original didn't either; his appeal was the iconic quote at crucial parts of the storyline). And "bad" in this context means (I suspect) not much like the original Scotty.

Take a big bag of popcorn and disengage brain for 2 hours. It'll be fine.

Gotta agree on the whole Scotty thing. If you have no concept of the original Scotty then Simon Pegg is bloody funny. If you do know and liked Scotty then it may be hard to take.

On the subject of the alternate reality, I think the writers played it safe. Loads of fans would have been in uproar if they tried to retcon (retroactively rewrite continuity) the history of the original storyline.

Personally i want to see either a Startrek Alternate reality (where they are all evil and have goatees) or a starfleet academy series...

Wouldn't be a patch on Jaws v Godzilla

(we toyed for a while with the idea of asking applicant here: who would win in a fight between Jaws and Godzilla. Perhaps predictably, we went with a different type of question).

Use the tabs at the top to scroll through to see the different in size between Star Wars ships and Star Trek ones.

On size alone (Death Star is the size of a small moon - compared to Deep Space nine that was designed to orbit a moon) Star Wars wins... plus they had Jedi...

Thanks, what a cool site! (for Sci-fi geeks like me...)

Size isn't everything, I mean both Death Stars were destroyed by tiny craft piloted by overweight crop dusters and film extras. Plus Star Trek had transporters....anyhoo I shall stop before this thread becomes even more tragic.

What amazed me was the size of Halo.

It took a Jedi with cyclist level reflexes to navigate the Death Star canyon. The second Death Star may have been fully operational but wasn't finished (the outer shell), which is why the Millenium Falcon was able to fly inside it like that.

I agree that Star Trek has transporters but they can't transport through sheilds plus the benefit of clones and sheer number of them means that even the combined forces of the Federation, Klingons, Romulans et al would be easily overwhelmed.

However if Q were to get involved Star Trek wins No one is taking down a Q.

(I would argue that Star Trek has the more advance technology).
