i have 2 and my gf has one
being a bit of a petrol head i have a 1983 golf gti that i have built from the round up for drag racing in a vw only race class and a bmw 323 '97 reg which i want to get rid of now im cycling again
the boss has an audi a3 which again may well be for sale as we want an estate for our bikes0 -
So far, I've thought about Audi S4 conv; Audi A6 est 3.0TFSI; Q7 V8 (petrol or diesel), XC90 V8, Merc E500 estate, Audi S8, Audi A8 4.2 (petrol or diesel), Audi S6 est; Golf R32, Touraeg V10 TDI, X5 V8, 540 estate, 535d estate, Range Rover (with aftermarket third row of seats) and probably some others I've already forgotten about.
yeah, went through a similar thought process before buying a (used) 535d estate. WOuld have considered a 545 petrol but there just arent many around. Not surprising because the performance isn't that different to a 535d and the fuel costs much worse.
In the end we wanted the flexibility of an estate otherwise would have probably gone for an A8. Big exec saloons are an absolute bargain second hand at the moment.
Tempted by an A6 for the 4wd but they are just not as good to drive as a 5 series (probably nicer to sit in though). Probably end up with an A6 next time for ski trips to the Alps - RWD and snow is a bad combination.
SUVs were always unpopular with the missus. We used to live in NW3 and the Hampstead school run is enought to make you reach for an RPG at the first sight of an SUV. Then in December she came round a bend to find a fookin Cayenne ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD COMING STRAIGHT AT HER. She got away with a cracked sternum, the car died.

My friend built a 750BHP Audi 90.......Tis true.
he is an Audi Mechanic by trade, although he is also a rower and doing a business degree to boot.
It was a broken down Audi 90 Quattro saloon with an old 2.2 engine. He got hold of an old S2 engine (2.2 5 cyl turbo) and tuned it to buggery! has a Turbo the size of a dustbin - feels like the earth revolves under the cars wheels when accelerating. However, it is un-driveable around town as it goes from no power delivery to nuclear explosion in an instant....kinda pointless really. The thing ws fitted with Porsche brakes and huge wheels, but otherwise looked like a piece of junk!
He paid £200 for the car and spent £24,000 on tuning. he rides a bicycle around most days as the car barely does 5 mpg. There is a great video of his home brew behemoth chewing up and spitting out a Lamborghini Diablo at Santa Pod Raceway.
After reading some of the reviews on this thread I am thining about a new car - just got a quote on a new 110" wheelbase Land Rover diesel.....Hmmmm!
probably end up with a Volkswagon van (surf bus) though!0 -

+1 on the Streetcar after many years of petrol-headonism
After a few years of Streetcar use, I think I am probably cured of my car addiction. Having more of the spendy stuff for bike bits helps a lot.
As a mostly weekend car user with 2 cars in central London it was scary how much cash they lost in depreciation, insurance and road tax - wish I had done it a lot earlier. Plus no more stress about impending MOT's, lowlife trashing it when parked up... plus cleaning the damn things
Not sure if its still the case, but at one point if you had off street parking in central London some of the car clubs would offer to put a car right on your doorstep *and* give you cash or free usage for the privilege. OK the cars are not exactly exciting (golfs), but they are new, big enough to get a bike in and someone else deals with the cleaning / maintenance etc.
Driving in London these days is rarely a pleasure and mostly a chore. I can understand if you lived somewhere with decent traffic free roads, but in London forget it. Ditch the car, use your bike even more and join a car club if you are an occasional user.
The money you save is enough for a track day or two every year to feed your "inner-petrolhead". This year some of the money I saved paid for a day driving race prepped Jag D-Types, E-Types and a DB5 at Mallory Park.... result 8)0 -
2 cars, 2 bikes. 4000 miles a year by bike, about 3000 by car.0
