Atm I do not drive but have a 1 litre micra on sorn. Will be traded (ie scrapped) for a punto, mito or mazda 2 in the summer, for work placement. 12 mile minimum each way commute through single track roads, b roads and a roads, plus trips to visit other placement students/back to uni

Oh gawd, where do I start!

I was a big petrolhead, but grew out of it very quickly when I realised that car ownership was not really for me. I find it a bit silly and shallow now - being careful where I parked a posh car, cleaning it and so on, I don't really care very much about cars now.

When I earned money, I had a Beautiful Porsche 911 (993) RSR - 450BHP and 900 kilo's in weight - frightening, no electric windows or any luxury - just power and handling, suffice to say I lasted 6 months with it before I decided it was too impractical (for a 26 year old!) and too demanding to drive daily - I was commuting from Cambridge to London most days - I bought a Honda Fireblade motorbike for my commute.

I then went for a Mercedes E320TD - boring, but easy to drive and then migrated to Alfa GTV's and Alfa Sportwagons.

And now I have downsized to Brizzle, I had a £725 Audi 80 2.8 - just sold it for £700! My wife owns a 1999 BMW 318i SE Estate. Little bit small for us, but it uses very little fuel and costs very little to run. So, I have no car!

Just need dog and kid carrying capacity.

Ultimately, I would have a 110 inch wheelbase Land Rover (I belive that as a Border Collie owner I get a discount.....!) - the new one. I am thinking about another motorbike though - I have been through a few, you don't know speed power and feel until you have owned a sports motorbike.....may go for a GSXR1000 or a 750....not sure yet.

As far as I could, I have always used a bicycle, but some jobs just demanded car usage - sadly. I now get a car allowance on my salary (some of the previous alfa's were company cars) - which I use to buy bike bits!

gtvlusso, you are a man after my own heart. I have never had quite the fabulous cars that you have, but have reached the same conclusions.

I have recently sold my series 3 109" Land rover station wagon, and am now carless. The wife does have a renault espace to haul the tribe around in, but I am more that happy with my two bikes.

I would like one of the new defenders though :D

Car and bike for me. We had two cars for long enough too.

The current car is a Megane Coupe (2002 model) ... dodgy electrics, no chance of a bike rack and you can just about get one bike and the rider into it, if you dismantle the bike.

We're currently looking at an upgrade to something more useful like a new Megane hatch or a Qashqai. Dull perhaps, but I'm just not that into cars.
Today is a good day to ride

    +1

No one needs 450BHP on road.....If you wanna go fast, get a motorbike, cheap, faster than any car sub £300,000!!!

In any case - I would have a new Land Rover now - the new ones with the seats that go all the way back! My old Lightweight S3 landrover was fantastic - just heavy on gas - my second car when I was a kid!

Motorbike for fun and terrorising old people on - Land Rover for dog, kids and washing out with a hose pipe!

We've got kids. We need a car but we only have one. Mrs J drives it more than me.

I'm with the estate contingent - does everything better than a SUV except drive offroad but as we know most SUV drivers dont go further off road than up the kerb...

We've got a 535D Touring which I reckon is pretty much the perfect compromise* family car. Comfortable, spacious, decent fuel economy, steers/handles like you expect a BMW to, oh and 270BHP, 410lbsft of torque! The twin turbos make it almost as smooth as a petrol too.

*in the sense of fun and practical for hauling the family off on holiday

On the other hand, just had to replace a 245/40 r18 runflat tyre... ouch.

Thankfully I live in a part of the country with a fab public transport system, and only a 20min walk from a supermarket. It's amazing how much shopping you can carry with a big back pack and other bags clipped on to it. My bike gets me to work, family, friends and the gym. So the need for a car is none existant. Mind you I grew up in a family that's never owned a car, so car ownership is abit of an alien concept to me.

I went without a car for over a year and managed fine, despite living in a small town in Devon. I caved in and bought a 7 seater volvo estate mainly because trying to take a family of 6 on a camping holiday in cornwall using public transport was something of a nightmare.

The volvo estate fits the whole family in (including legally required kiddy seats) and tows a trailer just fine. Its not by any means economical, but it sees very very limited useage. It cost about the same as my road bike

Still get the shopping delivered via internet, still walk into town. I do however get to visit family more often, and find the space usefull for collecting DIY type materials. It has convenience uses, its possible to live without and I think the break from owning a car has led to a general lessened use of the car now we have one again. I still resent the expenses of just "owning" a car.

Oh yeah Ive also got the rally car sat out back, forgot about that one. Its not been used in a long time, and at the moment I have no great desire to spend time and effort on that hobby, Another positive about not driving regularly for a year, helped me shake my motorsport addiction... I ripped the seats and harness's out recently for use with video games

    Nope! I got two bikes;

    2009 Specialized Crosstrail Expert

    2008 Yamaha Fazer FZ6 S2

...two wheels are ALWAYS better than four! (even though I have a total of four, but you know what I mean...)

I don't actually even have a driving liscense (or spell check I think). I keep meaning to learn to drive, just never finished my lessons from years back.

if you live central to a city or some where a bike/public transport is good enought then shouldn't need to, also depends on the jobs you tend to be in.

    Aye, I have both.

Cycle to work, trying to do it 4 times a week at present (only managed it properly once so far damnit), meaning I need the car at least on a Wednesday.

Sadly I find I am still using the car a fair bit at the weekend - getting out of town for whatever reason or nipping across town to the bloke's - if we're going out from his and there isn't much time, I'm not about to ride over as he lives atop a steep hill and I am ALWAYS dripping in sweat after climbing it. Not always time for changes of clothes, showers, etc. Sometimes I just walk it, mind you.

I'd like to ditch it. But I use it too much :(

Lived in a city most of my adult life, and a remote computer tech (so resolve most everything on phone or by connection to computer from my desktop.) So getting by generally ok at the moment without that driving thing.

Audi A8. Big, V8, 4WD, reasonably light for its size (if a bit nose heavy). Eats motorways for breakfast. Bit long in the tooth now. Costs a lot to fill the tanks and costs a 'king lot when something goes wrong.

We don't do the mileage to justify two cars. Kids walk or bike to school.

I've spent some time thinking about what I'd replace it with. The wishlist comes down to this:
    - fast (6s or less to 60)
    - 4WD (like that)
    - V8 (don't do enough miles to car about petrol costs) or better
    - good build quality
    - reliable
    - seven seats (for ferrying our kids and their mates at the same time)
    - convertible (always wanted a convertible)
    - lots of boot space
    - not in the highest road tax bracket

The convertible bit makes choosing tricky

So far, I've thought about Audi S4 conv; Audi A6 est 3.0TFSI; Q7 V8 (petrol or diesel), XC90 V8, Merc E500 estate, Audi S8, Audi A8 4.2 (petrol or diesel), Audi S6 est; Golf R32, Touraeg V10 TDI, X5 V8, 540 estate, 535d estate, Range Rover (with aftermarket third row of seats) and probably some others I've already forgotten about.

I really hope my car lasts a long time yet...

Yeah, the convertible thing may well end up being deferred as something wanted but not obtained. Maybe I'll end up silver haired in a soft top Elise one day.

Convertible RR = abomination. Plus convertibles have small boots and are (mostly) noisy on motorways. Two black marks.

Uncle has a Audi S3 with a V6 engine that made my girlfriend have a headache and passout after being driven in it. He had the slower S3 before that.... He is thinking of going for a TT, don't ask me why, he's never had a standard car.

On the subject of kids he gave me the expression that was near identical to the one I gave my girlfriend when she asked about my need to by a bike. Needs must Greg, you're a Lawyer get a car that says something about you professionally and privately...

    I have a Porsche 911 964 C2 (rear wheel drive) - in Red - the fastest colour.

Made in 1990 so the guts of 20 years old - smells like a Mescherschmitt - sounds like a Spitfire.

Looks something like this - (it's not mine by the way - no I don't have personal plate etc etc)

    Broom Broom.

My Penis is a normal size by the way - by normal I mean MASSIVE.

No it's not on my forehead.

Ram it in advance etc etc
Fixed gear for wet weather / hairy roadie for posing in the sun.

    Abomination.... perhaps

And that TVR was dreadfully noisy on motorways. And A-Roads, B-Roads, unnamed lanes, at traffic lights, in car parks.... Big boot though.

A motorbike (Hence a terrible lack of mileage on my cycle this year...) a road bike (Langster) and an MTB (Salsa El Mariarchi)

I hate cars with a passion, just wish I didn't want one to go to Afan on days off. I will figure out a way to fit my MTB to my motorbike...

    p.s. I also drive a bus...

Apparently you can get a baby seat in the back of it - I have no idea why you'd want to as the rest of the Baby logistics requries a space the size of an Aircraft Carrier's hanger deck.

For the purpose of the thread I drove a N reg Fiesta (having passed my driving test last October) T'was a wonderful little car with 52,000 miles on the clock, green, I called it Austin... Alas I crashed it about 2-3 months ago and have yet to fix the headlamp (the only bit of damage) oh and the battery is flat.

I hope to take delivery of a Seat Ibiza tomorrow or Saturday... depending on when I take delivery of my bike.

It's a bit telling that I haven't fixed my Fiesta given what I've spent on cycling during that time....

We downsized 4 years ago from 3 cars to one, after I forgot where one of them was parked and then found its brakes seized from lack of use. So now we have a Subaru Legacy Sports Tourer 3.0 which is 4 years old now and we'll run into the ground. It carries all our stuff and will keep your average supercar honest on continental motorways (as long as I don't have bikes on the roof) and away from the lights if you really feel like being childish. Its not as quick as my old XKR convertible, but its not too far behind, and it has a huge sliding roof, so the next best thing to open top motoring. It doesn't attract attention - either from the law or the chavs of West London. It does have a prodigous appetite for super unleaded but we use it so infrequently it hardly matters. It has all the toys a boy could want, but my GF doesn't like it at all - she still misses her sports car and the looks she got. Now she's just another scrummy mummy in an estate car, and not even a German one like everyone else... bless.
