I find myself in the enviable position of receiving a big fat tax rebate :D

Clearly I could be sensible and bank the cheque paying off some of my accumulated debts from the last six months or!!!! I could blow it on bikes & booze

What to do?!?

erm, buy a CARBON bike then!

    How about a Colnago EPS?

    EDIT:

Actually why not buy me a Colnago EPS. I've been wondering if carbon bikes can mate but I need a stablemate for Il Principe first...

It's hard to gauge another Man's spend-ability BUT TBH anyone who can survive 6 months off work (in this era) without needing to flog the wife's jewellery - whether because they are just that rich or that skillfull with money - is a man who can afford to splash a rebate on a bike.

It does depend on how much the time off "hurt" and depends on how big a plaster the job is... All of which only you can answer...

Things to consider (from what I remember when my own Father - now 47yrs old - was made redundant in the mid - late 90s telecomunications industry bust):

What other things have you gotta pay off/for?

Have you booked and payed for the family holiday?

Childrens education costs ITB juniors Oxford or Cambridge fund - which is years from now?

Savings - How big a dent did the 6months put a dent into it, could you survive another 3 - 6monts off?

Lastly you deserve a Carbon Fibre Bike, so get one! What would you get?

Of course you would have had to pay tax in the first place :( . So why are you receiving a considerable rebate? Job ended?

Carbon? Hmm, how about a Carbon/Flax mix, e.g. the Museuw (sp.?) brand. Or a titanium bike if you want to do longer rides?

Tbh, I'd sell some bikes first, pay off some debts, and then see what's around at then end of this year (in the sales) if you're looking to buy a high end bike? I know, I'm very dull. :)

Don't feel sorry for him. He's been loafing about the place (said "place" being most of Wiltshire) on a bike since last summer. :)

Yeah don't feel sorry for ITB! His constant Pimms pictures and ride reports - often with more pictures! Single handedly made redundancy appear cool, pleasurable and a status for the lucky!!!

This, predictably. Or something more expensive.

You've got enough bikes to allow you to keep a white bike for days when it won't get filthy.

Go for the full package: white saddle, stem (FSA), bars (ditto), tape, hoods (Hudz). White outers for the cables would be cool too. 40mm+ carbon clinchers.

Yeah, that should about do it.

Oh and in agreement with others, a considerable, but token debt payment and a nice shiny bike.

Jeez, you have enough bloody bikes. Buy something different - I second the holiday idea. Or buy something for the missus and bask in the sense of satisfaction you get from making her happy :)

But holidays are only temporary... a bike is forever.

Me, I'd buy a maxima. But I already have one. Probably about the same price as, if not cheaper than, that cervelo... and full custom.

On the subject of looking like a ghost bike, on my ride yesterday I saw a white bike chained to some railings in a village, I was stopped at the ped lights thinking 'gosh, in a village, how sad' when someone came out, unlocked it and rode off. Hmmmm.

Yes it would balance out the rather unpleasant last six months enforced holiday, mrs itboffin suggested Florida AGAIN  little itboffin votes for Barbados AGAIN

I might fix the ballot in favour of Ireland AGAIN  in fact I could ride there

+1 for the Maxima! Having said that if I got a tax rebate and suggested flogging some or all of it on a bike I think I'd have to pay for a divorce first :-)

My sensible side does say clear any debts first tho and then worry about how your going to spend what is left over.........

This thread might give you some inspiration

You could suggest the wife and littleuns go for two weeks to either France or Spain, you then cycle for the first week and meet up for the second week as a family holiday
