Ultegra crankset

Hi there

I've just bought an ultegra triple (lots of hills round here!) and bottom bracket set, and it came with a plastic cap to screw the pedal crank on, and also a shim. Any idea what the shim is for? Is it necessary? If so, what side should it go on?

Does the shim look like a top hat with the top cut off?

Goes between the bb cup and the frame shell. Can be used to adjust the chainline or deal with narrow BB shells. Last frame I fitted didn't need it.
