...What causes the noise to occur? ...Is it a marketing ploy or is there actually a reason why some hubs are very noisy?
Large pawls and strong springs.
I thought id hate mine but i dont really mind it, it depends very much on which bike its on, a freind has one on his Orange 5 and its loud, real loud I guess because of the big hollow swing arm. On my Marin is quieter."Didn't hurt"0 -
I quite like the noisy Hopes, they just sound industrial to me, like they're never ever going to break0

Do all Hope hubs make the noise?0

Not so with mine. On my SS, I've not yet opened them up, to even lubricate them yet. No grinding, cool noise, and they spin for bloody AAAGES. I get bored waiting for them to stop...
Also, the Pro II hubs are LOUD. Whoever said they aint - WHAT??
But it can only be a good thing, right - if your coasting, you shoul dbe pedalling!!
Boo-yah mofo
Sick to the power of rad
Fix it 'till it's broke0 -

The XC hubs are quieter than ProII's (steel freehub body too, so no cassettes trying to eat into them, unlike the alloy one on the ProII)0
