Whats the appeal with rear Hope Hubs?

Hi don't shoot me down, but what's appeal with having a Hope rear hub that makes a really loud clicking noise when free wheeling.
For me I love nothing more than to free wheel through a forest / wood with only the sound of my lungs trying to get the oxygen back into my body.
Can anyone enlighten me or push me to thinking that it's the way to go.
Cheers Paul

Those 3 arm rotor hubs with Stans rims look really good. But the noise would drive me mad, I just don't see the appeal?*Rock Lobster Team Tig SL (22lb 14oz)

Just a matter of taste, some people really like the noise, others can't stand it.
A bit like white components I suppose... :twisted:0 -

i had one on a bike before and the engineer in me thinks the sound is cheap. ive no issue with loud hubs, those halos sound pretty good, but the hope ones sound like a bag of parts falling down th stairs. i much prefer the more uniform sound of a softer click like that on a dt hub, whatever hub is on my rovals is absolutely amazing, sounds like pure swiss precision.0

I agree on the Pro 2's sounding like poo, but the older hopes sounded class."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

i wanna see what superstarcomponent super leggera hubs sound like, they have 120 point engagement so should buzz along quite nicely!!0

same as the supa drive.
bet it comes from the same place."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

was just looking at the halo webby out of interest, i wouldnt be suprise in the slightest if there is a bit of product cross over there.
have you heard the chris king rear hub? lordy thats a loud thing, but atleast it sounds like a precision engineered bit of kit, not just a load of pawls operating at random intervals like the pro 2s0 -
mine don't sound that loud at all.
also reminds me that i could always be going faster whenever i hear it!0 -
I was worried about it when ordering my SPXC3s - thought I would get annoyed with the sound, but now I actually really like it!
Plus it only sounds when you aren't pedalling. Its a great way of getting people's attention on a mixed bridleway/footpath rather than use a bell!0 -
I've got a hope Pro 2 (gunsmoke to match the brakes) on my Epic and it is really loud, much more than the Hope Pro I have on my hardtail. Doesn't bother me though as it just means people can hear you coming, so you don't startle horses/walkers etc. Plus other MTBers realise your behind them and move over0

I didnt buy my wheels for the noise but it does have the benefit, as others have said, of making yourself heard. Quite handy when i'm training so that people hear me coming up behind them without me having to shout at them to move.Scott Scale Custom

Not keen on the noise either. Noise says "inefficiency" to me.0
-
Yeah, BUT... the question is not answered, has turned into a do you like the noise or not thread!
...What causes the noise to occur? ...Is it a marketing ploy or is there actually a reason why some hubs are very noisy?0 -
Only when you stop pedalling, but yeah you're right. If I spin my gf's shimano/sun next to my hope/stans wheel, mine stops a fair bit sooner.Scott Scale Custom

I like the sound when I'm ploughing downhill and it's whirring away. As others have said it makes your presence known to other trail users.
It does however become tedious on a hike a bike.
Plus they are good hubs, reasonably priced, look sexy, easy to service and can be converted to numerous axle sizes easily.0 -
So the noise makes them less efficient at freewheeling and the only real benefit is the pretty noise?0
-
i definately noticed that the hope hub ground to a halt quicker than the dt hubs it replaced.0

Just did a quick comparison on my DT swiss hubbed wheel next to my Halo Supa Drive. Negligible difference in stopping and the Halo makes some noise I can tell you!!Scott Ransom 10

If this hub is bought for just the noise then people must be deluded
I see the main benefits as follows (in order):
Strength
Bearing quality
Weight
Adaptability i.e 20mm, bolt through etc etc
Customer Service from Hope
Colour

No, bought because its a tough hub, easily servicable, top notch customer service from Hope themselves. Not less efficient at all, mine spins nice and for a long time- its just the ratchet pawls engaging, there are a few hubs (like nicks) and I have a White Ind. on my SS that sound like a swarm of bees....0 -
This was one of my only concerns when buying my new bike, however I have soon got over it. I really don't notice it above the general mayham that follows in my wake, the noise of sheep, humans running for cover.
The clicking is great at letting people, fellow riders and walkers infront know your coming. I ride quite a bit around horse riders and they know your coming from a long way off and are prepared for you rather that coming up behind and dinging on you bell and shi@ting the horse half to death along with the rider.
I admit they probably wont appeal to some but the build quality has won me over.09 - Santa Cruz Heckler

My pro II spins for ages...
If yours are stoppping soon then check the seal round the freehub is in place properly. I like the noise when out for fitness rides, encourages me not to coast.0 -
No I meant the only benefit of the noise not the hub itself.
So the benefit is that people hear you coming vs the downside of it being quite annoying and possibly less efficient?
Could always use a lolly stock in the spokes? Be a lot cheaper and makes a sound like a motor bike if done correctly
So do manufacturers actually seek to make their hubs noisy on purpose? And if so, for what purpose? Or is it just a byproduct of superior engineering or a certain construction?0 -
