Porridge/Rice Pudding before a ride...

Just watching the cycling on Eurosport and the commentators were talking about "stomach problems" with the milk in porridge and rice pudding, so were saying that they make porridge with water instead...?

Anyone know what they were going on about? I always have mik-based porridge and i'm fine! :)

  • Some people find it more difficult to process milk. Lactose intolerance.

I don't have that, but I know I would vom if I took on porridge/rice pudding before any kind of training - cycling or otherwise.

I stick with a banana or two.

Nothing better than a nice big steaming bowl of porridge an hour or 2 before I go out however the rice pudding is strictly post ride for me (with the addition of promax natural). I make a big bowl of rice pudding and it will last 4 days. Even nicer with a big dollop of double cream however as I need to lose a bit of weight I have to do without

Its those that have the intolerance to alcohol that I feel really sorry for   Life without a beer, etc

Those roads in Turkey look a lot better on the tv than they were when I was in Turkey the last 2 years sans bike. More a case of trying to drag myself back to the apartment plastered and trying to avoid the cracks in the road and the crazy drivers who just honk horns at each other to warn everyone they are just about to swing round a corner at you.

    Mmm Porridge with beer... :)

I prefer my porridge made with water. Although about an hour after porridge I'm absolutely *starving*.

What? You're not having enough then! I have a big pan of the stuff and, when i'm not out cycling, I don't feel hungry until 2/3pm!

No, I eat a full bowl! With added fruit! It only happens with porridge though - I've started having muelsi before club runs because when I have porridge on my commute my stomach is rumbling by about 09.30!

My niciest version of the porridge is made thus:

In the saucepan I throw in the porridge oats & chopped mixed nuts (shelled nuts - nothing added) and toast them until they have just started to toast off then throw just a little water into the bottom of the sauce to take the heat out of it so that you can then put the milk in (otherwise the milk will burn if the pan if the pan isn't cooled first). Just before it's cooked I throw in some chopped fruit and local honey.

Pure heaven. Much tastier than just plain porridge. Keeps me going for a few hours (about 3 or 4).

but strictly speaking what you're making there is not porridge, but granola with hot milk.

I'll experiment with different meals before rides, but have used porridge with raisans and a drop of honey for flavour before, and it's been fine. I know a few riders who use the same but it's a personal thing. I've also used toast with honey and a banana or 2 as well.

What sort of meal are you having the night before?

    A toast user?

I used to be a toast user, but I have just about got my habit under control now. I still find it difficult to walk past a jar of marmalade without breaking out into a cold sweat.

Remember the first step is confessing to yourself that it's a problem.

    Good luck.

It's funny coz I'll never have toast unless I'm riding. Tend to eat a lot of fruit with natural yogurt, or bran loaded up with fruit, i.e strawberries, blackberries, grapes etc. And the toast is always grainery.

I enjoy a nice bowl of Quaker Oat Crunchies (or Oat Crisp as they are now called) with hot milk and honey, lovely before setting off on a chilly morning.

porridge with dried fruit and honey works wonders for me however I've found two eggs scrambled with two slices of wholemeal toast and a glass of OJ works even better, no hunger and far more overall endurance, every once in a while I add 5-6 slices of white pudding & baked beans - yummy :D

Why do people always insist on wholemeal or granary bread? White bread has slower burning carbs and is much better for energy.

I've always had porridge pre ride, but to shake things up a bit I've also had a banana, peanut butter and honey sandwich (in white bread) and that certainly does the trick!

I thought white and wholemeal bread had a very similiar GI. If that leads to roughly similiar times when energy from consumption is available (which will be dependent on what it is eaten with) then surely it is better to eat wholemeal bread simply because it has not had most of the nutrients (90%+) removed ie it gives you much the same energy hit in much the same time but also provides you with a much better range of nutrients to support health.

    Could be wrong.

I go to bed looking forward to my porridge in the morning - just made with milk & Jordans organic whole oats. I have it every day (unless staying in a hotel in which case it's full english). Boring or what?

How do you like Crunchy nut cornflakes? I can't buy them any more or I just scoff the lot in days.

If i'm going to have another type of cereal, i'll usually have about 4 bowls of it. Porridge is about 4/5 times more dense than other cereals, with the exception of 6 weetabix and a pint of milk, so I always feel cheated by having Special K or Bran Flakes. :?

Rice Krispies are the worst. 76% of the box is air.

I always have a bowl of porridge before I go out, in fact everyday for breakfast... porridge with cold milk and choc powder... lovely :)

Occasionally have rice pudding, again straight from the tin with choc powder... lovely! :)

Porridge tastes crap imo.I like a large bowl of shreddies before a big ride, and they got more carbs per 100g than porridge :D

I quite like porridge. Only the best for me though - the 1kg sack of Tesco / Asda / Sainsbury's (whatever) own brand!

With honey or lemon curd. Laugh all you want, but jst try it (if you like lemons, of course! 8) )

But porridge is more dense - so you get more grams in a bowl, making up for that. Of course, you could always have 2 bowls of shreddies, but it's one of those cereals which I seem to get bored of after 3/4 of the bowl... :?

Shreddies are higher GI than porridge though. If you think porridge tastes crap you're not making it right.

For me there is nothing to match the Scotts Old Fashioned Porridge (Brown not Blue Packet) which I enjoy pretty much all through the year apart from Saturdays when I really appreciate my scrambled egg and mushrooms.

I can understand negative opinions on nearly all the other porridge brands / types I have tried.
