    Here you go:

Get down the student union with a fist full of 10p coins and get calling. (Or you could email them - it's cheaper).

I don't know why you need a job - your parents have obviously done you proud so far and let's face it, you're only going to spend the money on beer, prophylactics and cycling clothes anyway...

It's the '19 and never had a job' bit that I'm stunned at. How do you buy bike stuff, petrol, food etc?

I assume the OP lives at home so no food bills......more importantly how do you pay for your bike bits?. :)

You obviously don't know Will. He only buys one drink when he goes to the pub, and he only wears one lot of cycling kit no matter how smelly it gets...

my first job was at maccas. 1 was 14 at the time and i lied about my age to get the job. i was paid $2.72/hr (aussie dollars). i rode my bike to work - my first taste of independence. 8)
i look back now and recall what a great start it was. maccas is a great business model, they will train you and you will be part of a team. sure, i never eat there now - but it was a great start.

You obviously don't want a job then

    +1

I was laid off in 1991 (I was 21) and the first job I was offered was cleaning cars every day on a forecourt after I had swept it. I did that for 3 or 4 months until I found something better (indoors) .

You kids today have no effing idea, you just sit on your elbows all day waiting for something to fall into your lap*

*Copyright my Dad, circa 1991 probably just before I grudgingly took a job cleaning 2nd hand cars.

I'd rather effing clean cars all day than work in mcdonalds, just cause I dont effing want to work in mcdonalds does not mean I dont want a job.

Oi young man, mind your effing language. It's that sort of attitude that makes me want to bring back National Service.

Here we are, (some of us) trying to help you, whilst doing a bit of student-baiting, and all you do is eff and jeff. Show some R.E.S.P.E.C.T. for your elders.

I'm sorry but some of the comments make me unhappy and angry and are just on here to wind me up.

People dont know me, people want to know how I buy my bike bits, that is none of their business, I was asking for jobs, not asking for people to come in here and ask me about how I manage to buy stuff.

Now say I found a bicycle shop I'd like to see if there is any job vacancies, would emailing them and explaining that I want to learn etc.... be an ok step? Or does no one reply to emails?

So despite the fact that you are surrounded by people who are winding you up, you continue to ask for advice.. :) :?

In my experience, the personal touch is best. It's ideal to meet, or at least talk on the 'phone as an email is easy to send and can be polished. Whereas in the flesh the potential employer can make a more accurate assessment as to your suitability for the position.

What are you studying, by the way? Is it something remotely useful in the real world? :)

Is that a qualification or a Pro-Continental team?

Would it qualify you for tele-sales? I gather there are often vacancies in that profession.

    Computer systems support.

    We create networks
    We learn about pc's
We learn about binary and how to program simple CPU's
We do CCNA, a cisco networking qualification.
We do most things to do with PC's.

    Look Will,
You're not helping much here. Sell yourself. What do you have to offer? What are your skills, interests?

  • I'm looking at the mo, and I've got a piece of A4 paper with phone numbers on of places I wouldn't mind working at in Chester. I'm gona ring them one by one and ask. The worst they can say is no.

Also, try fish4jobs.co.uk, I've found it very helpful, cos the companies in there obv don'y mind if its personal or not.

I gave you honest advice re your benefits question and quoted (as closely as I can recall) what my Dad said to me when I said I dont want to clean cars for a living, again.

I wouldnt e mail a small (non chain) shop no. I would (if needed) have a shave and get a hair cut, dress presentably (not in a suit necessarily, clean and ironed shirt will be more than enough) and approach them directly, early in the morning. Even if you dont have the experience he wants you can still persuade someone that you would be good for their firm in the long run. "I realise that I will be starting at the bottom and will therefore be making the tea and sweeping up everyday, Im very keen to learn blah blah blah blah". In not too long you will be saying to the next person through the door "oi Im parched, put the kettle on lad".

Good luck, its a huge world out there full of Companies that need good staff.

I try these fish4jobs site but most of the jobs you see are like managers and all that, everything says must be experienced, at least 2 years etc...

I'm looking for small time jobs, even if it was some firm that went round doing peoples gardens.

Well I just looked on Fish4Jobs, seen some garden center assistant jobs, not near me though, hardly any info, so if I rang them up (if they where near me), would it be ok to ask them what I would be doing and if they'd train you/ tell you how to use things etc..?

Also I am looking for a job at the beggening of July, so would it be ok to tell them I'm looking for starting in July though?

    Hi.
    ......
First thing is, anyone know if places like Tesco and Sainsburys have plans so if you get a job and you are a student in the holidays they can relocate you to a store near where you are studying when term time starts again?

Also, I'm wanting to apply for jobs now, but since I'm at college I cant start untill like july when I come back, so I suppose I have to tell them I'm unable to start a job if I get accepted untill say the 1st of july, some application forms dont ask you when you are available to start, should I include a note or something with the application form?

These application forms seem to have quite abit of detail on, like your education and that, tesco not so much, so should I include CV's with them?

    Any insight would be aprechiated

    Thanks
    Will.

what you should do is apply for job near your uni now and but the time near summer, you can ask for a transfer to wherever you live. Tesco def do that as that what happened to my mate.

  • Most of them are, but just take the time do trawl the site and ther'll be something there that you want to do. I'm in the exact same position as you, full time over summer then oaert time in term time, and I was offered a job in a cakll centre the other week. Unfortuinately I couldn't start when they wanted me to, but if you've got the attitude that "Oh they never rang back so I won't try" then you won't get far.

Just get a job doing anything.

It's easier to get a job if you're in a job. McDonalds is a cracking place to start where you don't need any experience, ideal for students.

Whatever you get you will likely be on minimum wage...

Then whilst you are at McDonalds, be on the lookout for something else...

I worked as a washer-upperer from a very young age in a local restaurant (I just walked in and asked) then worked there as a waiter when I was a bit older, I got another waiting on job whilst at university by just phoning a restaurant, telling them of my experience.

During the easter holidays I worked at a plant nursery packing during the day on top of this.

There's plenty out there, you just can't be picky...

    Jeez,
Look Will, these are the desirable characteristics which the employers hope to get in the applicants. But just look at some of the knuckle-dragging f*ckwits you get in middle management in shops, offices, banks etc. They haven't got a clue.

Stewie's right; as I said before, get down to places so they can see you in the flesh. ASK if they have a few minutes to chat to you. Leave them a CV, or at least some contact details. Anywhere yo're really keen on, give them a call 2 or 3 days later (make sure you get the name of the person you spoke to). Show them you are interested and that you care....

Or you could go to McDonalds...

agreed - the personal approach is best - especially for the type of job that you are looking for.

it shows that you are eager and ready to get off your butt. they also get the chance to check you out to see if you would fit in.

That's it, take the easy way out.

Sit down in front of a mirror and repeat after me, "Do you want fries with that?"

Now say it 480 times - 0nce a minute for an 8 hour day.

THEY HAVE GOT VACANCIES BECAUSE NOBODY WANTS TO WORK THERE!!!

    Wow....

I decide to apply somewhere, where I said I would not go to work and people say I obviously dont want a job then...

    Now....

I get flamed for applying there...

    Wow... Just amazing this.....

I'd get £4.65 an hour there, be able to get new wheels after like 6 months.

I dont have to accept a job if I get accepted right? I'm going to look for other places too...
