Loss of fitness

I had a knee op recently which meant two weeks off the bike and i went out yesterday for the first time and really suffered.
The first hour or so my legs felt like lead,i got a real nasty and persistant stitch and quite honestly i felt like throwing up
As the ride went on(50 miles in the end) i did begin to feel better but my legs turned to jelly every time the road went upwards.
I consider myself to be quite fit and have completed many rides over 70 miles so far so i was suprised to be out of condition so much after my period of inactivity.
Is this normally the case when off the bike for a bit, and how long would it take for me to get "match fit" again?
Thanks anxiously,Rich

I'm sure you'll be fine pretty quickly.
I had two months off due to DVT last summer and bounced back, This spring was the fittest I've ever been. Until I broke my leg...
This will mean 3 months of zero excercise but after last time I know I can bounce back.
What I am saying is don't worry about it, don't rush back into it, don't overdo it!0 -
Best to take it really easy, ease yourself in with short slow rides and you will soon be flying again. It's really not worth the risk of causing problems if you have just had an operation to your knee, have you had advise from your doctor?0

I had 2 weeks off in Feb and the first ride out I pushed too hard and injured my knee, resulting in another 2 weeks very limited training.
You can probably do the same distances as you used to, but at a lower intensity. You'll probably get out of breath more though. It took me only about 5/6 days to get back to normal after my knee injury clamed down.0 -
2 weeks off following knee surgery??? I take it that it wasn't a serious op? What's your consultant have to say?0

It was keyhole surgery to trim the cartlidge.Seems ok now and doesn't affect my riding.
Thanks for the advice fellas,i think my problem was trying to ride at the same intensity as before the op when my body's not ready for the sudden activity.
I'll build my fitness back up gradually and look forward to (hopefully) a golden summer
Just off to the New Forest in the sunshine for some gentle spinning
