Cycling isn't cool anymore

I loved bikes before they were cool!

When I was young and I mean real young like 10yrs old I used to watch guys (probably Greg66) zoom past on road bikes, lycra-clad, cool shades and I used to think that 'wow looked cool!'

As I grew up I used to watch the Tour de France, I had no clue who was winning (I figured it was the yellow jeresy because of the cheesey channel 4 intro) but I loved looking at those pretty road bikes. I dreamed of riding a road bike on an endless road. I still dream of that now!

Cycling was cool back then, it was serious and it needed understanding, dedication and passion. Sure everyone and their dog could jump on a bike but not everyone especially not the tw@ts.

Now don't get me wrong, the more cyclists the better. But not if it means exploiting it and reducing it into something the fashion concious can digest.

First Top Shop launches a 'fashion cycling range' now Alan Sugar on a Pinarello. I don't doubt he is enthusiastic, but come on! Yes the publicity is good but while cycling is getting all the iPod/Scooter sensational levels of publicity - with every celebrity is coming out of the woodwork on their bikes. The real issues such as road safety, more awareness of cyclists, better facilities and a proper cycling network of cycle lanes I feel is being over looked.

Doesn't mean I'm going to stop cycling, but it just doesn't feel cool anymore.

Just saying is all.

Personally I think everyone should feel absolutely free to jump on a bike... it has always been so ever since I was a kid - it was there, it transported me, it was fun. I didn't look think about dedication and training, and the Tour de France looked about as boring as watching F1 on the telly, to me.

Not sure what world you grew up in, but bikes have always been everywhere, in my life. Ridden by racers, school-kids, normal people, and tw@ts.

Wow, what a "cool" statement. I can just imagine The Fonz saying that.

DDD, I admire your dedication in keeping us all entertained during office hours. However, it has to be said that you don't half spout some bollocks a lot of the time.

Cycling fashion has always been cool, take a look at Paul Weller back in the day. You can't base your feelings on a high street, low-end shop and a man who (as far as I know) has never claimed to be cool.
I mean Boris cycles and.............oh, right, good point.

I agree, anyone on a bike is a good thing. If they want to dress up like a "fakenger", that's fine. The more people on bikes and out of cars the better, there's safety in traffic in numbers.

    Wow!

So not a popular thread then.

Thing I don't get is this:

You all acknowledge the subjects involving cycling that get publicity but do nothing for cyclists.

You all send your deepest sympathy and acknowledge a need for better cycling facilities in general.

What you aren't willing to do is say that you don't want trivial publicity, what you want it improvements for cyclists and cycling in general.

You guys just aren't cool anymore.

I've done that before, but I still had to have a shower, I just dried my entire body and hair with paper hand towels....

    I'm happily incredibly uncool :D

Do you feel cycling has 'sold out' eh, DDD? I'd be surprised if you were into bikes before they were cool, or were you born in the 19th century?

I'm cool, I'm black and listen to both Kurt Cobain, Nas, Lupe Fiasco and Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

I was wearing Air Force 1's, Addidas Decades and a Nike Windbreaker (orginally seen in the 80's movie Breakdance) before they were popular and bought back into production several times over.

    There I said it.

Hang on DDD, who elected you chairman of the cool, Jude Judy and executioner of cool? Who are you to pass judgement on the who's who of cool?

I put it to you that you are in fact, bored silly at work and trying to find a way of passing the minutes until home time by deliberately provoking the forum!

    Well done you!

However, I suspect you're nerdy deep down. A proper geek. Or you wouldn't be so prevalent on these forums OR going so nuts over cycling and road-bike evangelising :D Am I right?

Yes, just like Hip Hop, Football and comics - Don't even get me started on Jeph Loeb, you haven't seen a rant until you've seen a DDD Ultimate 3 and Jeph Loeb rant! LOEB!!! I Hate you!!!

Is nothing from my childhood sacred anymore... Even cartoons are rubbish these days, nothing better than Transformers (Generation 1), He-man, Thundercats and Ninja Turtles and Dragonball Z.
I'd be surprised if you were into bikes before they were cool, or were you born in the 19th century?

The only recorded person still alive from that era is Greg66
