Labyrinthitis

Hi everyone.

Has anybody had any experience of labyrinthitis ?

I was struck down with this on 8 January and rode my bike for the first time this year last Saturday, only managed 3 miles and had to use mtb around the park, felt too nervous to clip in and go out on the road.

Prior to this, I would average around 70-80miles per week, inc a 50 on saturday morning.

The condition has left me exhausted most of the time and although I am desperate to get riding again, I know I have to take it easy and was just looking for any advice on how to get going again, how much fitness/strength will I have lost ? How long before I am back to the levels of fitness I had before xmas ?

Any advice would be very welcome

    Hey there,

Have you been to this website?

It doesn't sound pleasant. I wish you all the best. Hopefully you'll be able to ride again soon.

    Cheers

All the best mate, hope you are back to strength soon! Keep getting checked on by the doctor often though to make sure you aren't aggravating anything.

On the fitness front - can you use stationary equipment like a rowing machine or turbo trainer? They might be a way of exercising your heart and legs without risking an accidnet caused by your dizziness.
I haven't had labyrinthitis but did have a bout of something called BPPV - a crystal loosened in my inner ear (sounds whacky but apparently true!) and I was reeling & incapable of driving, cycling - could walk but only with great care and concentration. It disappeared by itself after a few days but I did try out the head tipping/roll over exercise which I think helped. Scary feeling tho' . dizzy in bed with no alcohol involved!
Be patient and don't give up - you will get better!

Some one I know had the BPPV thing, we were riding along one minute, the next he was on the deck, couldn't even sit up and his eye balls were vibrating. Took the hospital 2 days to figure it out. But he recovered quickly and was back on the bike in a week.

    Thanks for the comments.

My ENT consultant mentioned the BPPV thing, its very similar and just as nasty.

The dizziness and holding on to the bed was horrible, it actually felt like i was going to fall off the bed at some points . . .

My daughter had, perhaps, this last year. We weren't convinced of the diagnosis tbh but it was pretty horrible. Broadly speaking, it took her about 5 months to get back to anything like normal and she wouldn't have been doing any heavy exercise at that point.

I understand that's unusual and 6 weeks would be more typical, so hope you can shake it off quicker. Nasty.
