What do you wear under the cycle shorts and why?

Tights, shorts, 3/4lengths. Perhaps you wear tights or 3/4 lengths and shorts over the top or visa versa. In any case. Under your (your lower region) cycle clothing do you go commando, why?

Me? I go commando, took me a while to warm to the idea but once I did it it wasn't so much comfortable (it was) it also felt very natural.

I did have issues about the taboo "oooo I've got no undies on" but then I quickly realised that nearly every other cyclists (especially roadies) also did it and came to the conclusion that it was socially OK.

I'm a convert to "go commando", and much more comfortable it is too. Must admit I do usually wear shorts over the top, unless it's dark.

    There's nothing anti-social about it, unless... http://krisalis.org/weblog/?p=1483

No reason to wear anything underneath - the "pad" is enough!

a long time ago I had bad experiences with seams.

    Bits went numb !!!

and pins and needles in those bits isn't funny (well not when its your bits anyway)

So commando everytime now unless I'm just nipping down to the shops

Sorry for any bad mental imagery this post may have caused :)

I have never even thought about wearing something under my bibshorts. I wear them as they are designed to be worn.

I don't wear anything under lycra, never have. But TBF I do wear baggy cotton boxers so I'd look like i'm carrying a load so to speak.

As a novice can I just ask a question....

I know about pants. oh yes. I get the concept of going commando, I get the concept of not going commando.

I am just not sure what needs to going on under my shorts in order to qualify for the 'Other' section'.

Cycling shorts effectively ARE underwear, the real question is what do you wear over them. For me, I usually stick on a pair of baggy shorts for commuting, nothing on top for weekend rides on the road bike.

on a road bike it's wince making for me any other way but lycra shorts + baggies as i like to take phone/wallet and hate any thing in my shirt. for town bike just normal clothes as thats what that bike is for ie popping to the shops.

on the MTB mostly lycra + baggies don't need it as much as one is off the saddle and moving for MTBing but it's a little more comfy.

I am pefectly comfortable with undies then shorts. Yet to be convinced of the need for going commando!

At the moment I seem to wear pants, then 3/4 non-padded tights then my cycle shorts over the top of that! Wore that very combination to do last year's Capital to Coast with no discomfort.
  • How can you go 'commando' under cycling shorts when they are meant to be worn next to the skin?

It would be like saying you're going commando when you wear nothing under swimming trunks.

Personally I spend £50 on cycling shorts with flatlock stiching and a seamless chamois, but out of a sense of Victorian prudishness, I wear pantaloons made from coarse sack cloth underneath them, just in case a non cyclist ever asks me what I wear underneath.

    +1

I can't understand why anyone would wear something under them - asking for trouble really. It's kinda like getting up in the morning, popping on your undies and then popping on another pair for good measure!

Or like wearing cotton underpants under your swimming costume! (as someone wise once said to me)

Of course, if you wear white cycling shorts, or other light colours, especially in the wet, there may be modesty issues!

I wear underpants underneath my cyling shorts for two main reasons:

    1. I have a shower at work AFTER cycling in with no shower at home first. This means that I am cycling with a (possibly) not ENTIRELY clean bottom. I would rather not take the risk of claggy bits or pasty heads fixing themselves to the lycra.

    2. I have a small tear in the stitching right at a VERY strategic position in the front of my shorts, so going commando would NOT be a good idea.

I would like to apologise for any mental scarring the above has caused.

    Never worn anything under Lycra.

Didn't really know you were meant to go commando or anything, but I just thought what's the point of clothing thats designed to work as a second-skin, if you're seperating it with a layer of cotton / other non-wicking / non-technical fabric.

Lycra is incredibly comfortable I think - I wear Skins running shorts at the gym with baggies on top (if I remember to bring them!) and usually a cycling (compression) base-layer too as running tops tend to be baggy and annoy the hell out of me!

Endura Humvees - Full & 3/4 length, with the click-in padded liners and thats it.

Will get around to bib shorts/longs when I can find some that fit my 6'3" height & 33" waist and which don't cost the earth. I'll still wear baggies over the top though.

  • Did start with boxers as only had one pair of shorts and didn't want to wash every day as wouldn't dry in time. As i got more shorts the boxers vanished. Much more comfortable

Before my recent crash I had planned to do a week long tour in June. To minimise packing & weight and the need to wash every night I had wondered if women's panty liners might offer a hygene solution     :D Perhaps my injury was a godsend :D

  • I am new to all of this as have only just bought my bike today! Which size lycra shorts do I need? In trouser size I am 34" - 36" waist. These are the shorts I am looking at:

    http://www.evanscycles.com/products/tre ... t-ec017501

Should I go for Large (ignore the Sold Out sign!) which is 32" - 36" or XL instead which is for 36" - 40". Would they be okay?
