Weekly Alcohol Intake

Hi All
I like the odd can of lager watching the football/cricket and a glass of wine after work in the evening.
How many units of alcohol per week do you drink?
If you don't know what a unit is then goto http://units.nhs.uk/unitCalculator.html or google a unit calculator yourself.
How do drink effect your cycling performance do you think?
Cheers

I don't drink UNITS I drink PINTS.
Beer is my weakness. I can take it or leave it in some respects, but when I go and watch my beloved Hucknall Town FC and I'm having a laugh with my mates it's quite easy for me to smooth upto 10pints off during the course of the day. Needless to say that is not good for my biking.
Having said this I won't have a drink 'til the next weekend.
Am I a "binge drinker"?
Do I care?
As far as I'm concerned I'm happy with my lfe style, I ride my bike a fair bit and enjoy a drink with my mates. Mrs Tank doesn't complain so I must have it just about right I reckon.Tail end Charlie

None.
Don't go out friday or saturday due to cycling commitments and i've never been one for having a drink with lunch/dinner."A cyclist has nothing to lose but his chain"

I like a drink. There I've said it.
I have no idea what a "unit" is. I assume it's some made up term with no bearing in any actual measure of alcohol.
I may have a glass of wine with a meal, I may have a beer with a meal. I may have a few jars on a friday or saturday (not if i'm racing the next day though). As far as I can see the drawbacks in any normal quantity are that any alcohol in your system stops your fat burning and that it dehydrates you. Both of which you can manage as long as you're sensible.
In all things moderation."In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

And you would be wrong:
1 unit = 10 mL (8 g) of alcohol0 -
I stand corrected.
I'm still pretty certain that exceeding my Labour party recommended dose of Victory Gin hasn't harmed me in any grave manner however."In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

a fair amount
keep the body in check on my bike and other exercise though
sure if i didn't drink i would be more of an athelete. but then i cannot see much advantage in going without wine or beer.
so answer is too much, but in moderation
mind you the amount of exercise seems to have to increase or the amount of booze decrease as I get older if i want to maintain the status quo.

does that calculator only do vodka in shots?? if so how many shot can you get out of a 70cl bottle?
I think everyone my age probably drinks far too much, and somehow never runs out of money. I always feel like im going to get fat after a good drinking session so usually go on a ride the next day, if I have the energy and capability that is.0 -
Teetotal now. Used to drink 20 pints a day!
Problem? Yes, I couldn't really afford it.Powered by Haribo.0 -
I've recently stopped the pop to shift some pounds to help haul my larger frame up hills. My heart rate is up to 10 bpm lower on the same climbs than it was when I was on a diet of hops, grapes and tavern snacks. Have I been cheating my training zones? Do I need to go back and start doing my winter miles again? I was working on the theory that carrying lard over the winter would help with the insulation and strengthen the legs for the summer. Is this soundly scientific? If they can get you asking the wrong questions, they don't have to worry about answers.0

I've tried drinking a few times, just out of curiosity, but it's never had any effect on me. :?
So I just don't bother - why pay loads for it when I can have water and experience no effect too?0 -
In a typical week - I don't have any acholol - that isn't to say Im tee total - as an older bloke I find it takes me a couple days to recover from a 'session' - and there are things I would rather spend my cash on.0

Loamy. I think a shot = 1 unit so you have around 28 in your vodka bottle.
True believers can find the details on units etc. on the Drink Aware website.0 -
27 units in a bottle of vodka (most vodkas are only 37.5%).
Units have been around donkeys year and, as correctly pointed out above, 1 unit = 10ml pure alcohol. The recommendations come from various legitimate medical bodies (rather than t'government) but actually have very little scientific evidence behind them. No-one is really sure how much alcohol is a "safe" amount to drink per week so they are just guidelines really.
However, there is lots of evidence that drinking too much, drinking every night and binge drinking (5 or more units in one sitting surprisingly) are pretty detrimental to your health.
Having said all that I'm going out for a 'binge' tonight coz it's my birthday. And as long as you drink less than your doctor your safe!!0 -
Typically I won't drink most weeks. However, I'm not opposed to drink and will maybe have a glass of wine or a beer every so often. Sometimes only works out as little as 2 drinks a year, but apparently this means you are not allowed to put 0 units in official forms which ask you for your weekly alcohol intake. So I'll have to vote 1 unit.
You are supposed to be more healthy for having the occasional drink anyway, which is probably why I still have that odd drink now and again.0
