Whats the biggest off-road ride you've done in a day?

and how much climbing was there?

I'm looking at doing some big rides in places like the Dark Peak, Lakes and Exmoor this year (so quite technical riding) and want to see what people have managed.

It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result

Its amazing how little 20 mile routes in the peaks look like a gentle 4 hour ride yet turn into all day leg sapping epics

Years ago, myself and a gang of mates used to go to Keswick every Easter. Our big Saturday ride was a circuit of the North-Western Fells, taking in Borrowdale, Honister, Scarth Gap, Ennerdale, Buttermere, Newlands Hause and Portinscale.

The loop wasn't actually that long at 37 miles, but bear in mind that there was almost 7500 feet of climbing in that too!! And this was in the day when if you had 2" of front fork travel, you really were something!!

Longest ride 76 miles, Downs Link from Guildford to Shoreham and back, just over 6 hours of cycling, approx. F all climbing except one hill right at the beginning and one hill about half way where an old tunnels been filled in, no technical parts, its an old railway line!

Hardest ride 45 miles, Surrey Hills,St Marthas, Pitch Hill, Holmbury Hill, Leith Hill, Winterfold Woods and Blackheath. Very muddy, constant chain suck for about 1.5 miles is very demoralising when your riding alone.

As you can see I don't travel much.

Our longest ride was Winchester to the youth hostel at the top of Truligh hill on our first attempt at the South Downs Way. 76miles and lots of climbing, not very technical but one of my favorite rides so far (well the 2nd attempt when we actually completed it was anyway, check out the pics of the first failed attempt in my pinkbike album!)

Batch- Surrey hills are immense, and i like the round of that route, one for the future me thinks ;)

  • Got some good'uns there.

OK think I'll keep the Peaks ride shorter than first thought.

Done 85 off miles on the Ridgeway which must be around 6-7,000ft on a hardtail (kept thinking I was sitting on a tennis ball after that ride - ow).

Done short 15 odd miler in Exmoor that killed us - did have around 6,000ft climbing tho.

I've done 75 miles on the British heart foundation off-road London to South coast which had around 3,000ft. Also hope to try their the big Chilterns, Peaks & Exmoor rides this year too.

Good plan to err on the side of caution in the Peaks. I rode the South Downs Way with AndyTurner and that was tough but the terrain in the peaks is considerably more technical and much more energy sapping. Both immense fun in different ways!

100 miles South Downs Way. Hardest single (sporting) day of my life. Don't know how much climbing, but it ain't flat. Not too technical but sapping!

last summer i did a 54 miler on the quantocks, that equates to about 3000metres of ascent/descent.

did just over a hundred miles up there over 3 days during that weekend inc the friday night.

well all i will say is,if you are looking at doing anything on the peaks from 15-20 miles,id give youreself at least 6 hours,im sure a few ppl will say no,but it does take it out of you, last time we was up there we passed a group of lads on the start of our ride, dont know how far they had done before us but they where blowing a lot on our first uphill

and furthest ride ive done was 65 miles in one day, whitby to hull, did it for a local church for a new roof, did whitby to scarbourgh off road and rest on road, but if anyone knows the scarbourgh to bridlington road its all up and down,we couldnt sit on our seats for last 15 miles as our arses where killing us,started at 7am and fin at 3-30pm,then in pub at 5pm,

just got back from 4 days in the hope valley in the peak district. Bought the Dark Peak mountain bike guide book which is brilliant and has good routes, the longest day week did was 65km, from about 10am to 7-6pm. We were absolutely knackered after wards! If you go to the dark peak you must do Jacobs ladder! Really good fun :D

+1 for the South Downs in a day. 160km with 3400metres of climbing. Leisurely 13hr 40min. A few punctures and a nice detour for food.

So far this year for the MTB - 145km. 80km out and back over the South Downs + 65km road work with some ex club roadies.

62km of Afan before I went pop!
