Training in Athens (Greece)

I have to work in Athens for three weeks each month for the next year or so. Does anyone have any advice on cycling in Athens? Is it possible to rent a bike there as I will be in hotel in the centre of town at least for the first three week stint. After that hopefully in an apartment and could take a bike out there with me. Otherwise it will probably have to be sessions in the hotel gym during the week and maybe something outside Athens during the weekend.

    I just lived in Greece for the last 3 years, just outside Athens (Nea Makri, on the East coast).

    There's loads of excellent riding, both road and off road in the immediate area of Athens, and more generally in Attica and the surrounding islands.

    There's also a very friendly, locally run triathlon event - have a look at http://www.schiniathlon.gr/ with sprint and Olympic distances, run three times a year.

    I know more about the mountain bike scene, though as I'm not into road riding.

    There are a couple of cycling forums, cyclist.gr being the biggest, but there's not a lot of English used on the forum (although most of the guys on there speak reasononable English).

    There's also crazybikeworld.gr, but this is a closed, invitation only forum - but it has the "English Pub" section, created just for Emily and I when we joined! Email me your email address and I can ask the admin to invite you - there are quite a few roadies on there that will be able to give you better information than me. alaricdarmon@bigfoot.com

    If you're into off road riding as well there'll be someone willing to show you around, too.
