Just did my first Roller Race!

Put on by the Rollapaluza guys in Manchester last night.
I was really struggling, but I managed to get up to 203 RPM at one point.
Came 11th out of about 40.
One thing I noticed was that there was a lack of lactic acid buildup - almost none, in fact. I was simply out of breath!
So, how do you get better at doing such a thing? Would this be beneficial on the road? Or too energy inefficient?

The guy that won did under 20 seconds every round - out of 8000 contestants, only 12 others have gone sub-20 before! Was quite a sight!
