tonic water/quinine and cramps

I have had some nasty cramps lately, talked to the physio at work and apart from hydration and stretching, she mentioned to drink tonic water often as the quinine helps with cramp avoidance.

has anyone else heard of this and had any noticable results?

  • While it's touted as an old treatment, I would suggest obtaining professional medical opinion on this before self medicating.

For example, does the bottle tell you the amount of quinine it contains? I doubt it. Might hardly be enough to have an effect. Might be more than necessary. Who knows?

Quinine can also have undesirable side effects. There's a reason why the FDA in the US banned the marketing of quinine products for muscle cramps, removed it from OTC sales and banned most quinine prescription products.

I've been told this one before - by a Doctor.

Mate of mine got it from an old chap in his club - he swears by it now...
