recovery drink

Do many of you use recovery drinks after a training sesh if so which 1 would you recomend but bearing in mind i'm trying to lose weight, but also after having a good run out on Sundays cant stop eating the rest of the day. any advice greatly welcomed cheers

I used to use SIS Rego and it does work but gives some people wind. I find that a normal chocolate milkshake is as good as any recovery drink. I only use recovery drinks on rides of over 80miles.
If your needing a recovery drink then dont worry about the calories in it because if its does its job then it will stop you from reaching for the biscuit tin and those sarnies.Brian B.0 -

My legs were feeling tired and over tight with the commute and a 2 - 3 hour ride on my day s off, started using Rego and my legs feel a lot less tight. Also when having a shower I end up running cold water over the legs. Works for me. I too am training to lose weight so I only use 30 g for my commute and depending on the long ride I may increases this.0 -
Like Brian B, i used to use SIS Rego but now use Alpro Soya choc milkshake or any of the common brands that are on offer at the time.
I only use them after either a really hard session or a long one where i estimate i've burned off so many calories it doesn't matter how many are in them.
I find they all work about the same. Just tried the choc For Goodness Shakes for the first time and was impressed - felt really good the next day.
I tend to find that after the initial recovery drink and taking on more fluids and a bite to eat i feel OK. Then about 2 hours later i feel low and need to eat again before feeling back to normal albeit still tired in the legs.0 -
I use Rego after a long ride if I've another hard ride the next day. It really helps, but tastes horrid. Best downed from a glass rather than sipped from a bottle.0

I've been using SIS Rego Rapide after heavy turbo sessions, part of my key goal of losing weight but I want to be able to get back on the bike asap. Make sure you are using the Rapide rather than regular Rego as it contains whey protein instead of just soya.
Whey is absorbed faster, so if you are drinking immediately at the end of a session you should get maximum benefit without it being stored up as fat. I think its important not to worry too much about the recovery shake scuppering your diet plans - one thing is whey will keep you feeling fuller for longer (or so many whey shakes claim...) and it will at least help you repair for the next session.
Recently I bought an 'all in one' called 'Bikefood' for use during and after riding as it has protein in it too. Probably not as effective as a designated recovery shake, but cheaper than buying both drinks and shakes, and it's specifically for cyclists. Not used it yet, saw it in CW's fitness special. When I ordered it they had an offer on where you send in your old waterbottle and they give you a new one free!
On my personal weight loss I have been up and down and its pretty annoying, but the most effective way I have found to drop the weight is to not worry about cutting back on your cycling nutrition, but to cut out all the rubbish foods, sweets, treat and just make sure you are getting lots of time in the saddle and riding hard (but enjoying it). Heres a home made version that I religiously use after rides of more than 1.5 hrs, a lot cheaper than anything you can buy.
1 egg (nearly wrote ägg )
1 banana
2 heaped table spoons mixed tinned fruit
150ml milk (give or take)
half teaspoon salt
whisk it up milkshake style and youll have two glasses of heaven, not sure how it goes for weight watching but I dont have to worry about that :twisted:.........all

+1 for Rego. Not the best taste in the world but it does the job. I'll use it if I train for longer than an hour.0 -

Just thought it was worth mentioning for those concerned about weight gain and recovery drinks. As long as the rest of your diet and training is fine I really wouldn't worry. I've lost a lot of weight over the last few months, just by being strict on my food intake and training hard on the bike, and I always use a recovery drink after riding. Usually Rego, and either 50g after a long ride, or around 30 after a hard turbo session of an hour or more. If you're putting on weight with a recovery drink, I would take a look at your diet..;-)
I did a 55 miler today on my own at an average pace of 17.5mph, including a few hills, and I had 50g in 500ml straight afterwards. I would also recommend getting the drink down you within 20 mins of finishing your ride. It's when your body is at it's most receptive. Known as the Woo...Window of Opportunity.0 -
Rego is a waste of money IMO. Buy maltodextrin and whey protein in bulk from myprotein.co.uk and save yourself a fortune mixing your own.0
