Powertap misbehaving

I've been using a powertap since about November but haven't really been using the interval mode so far. I have the wired SL version
Now I've tried a couple of times and wonder if I am doing something wrong. When I hold down the mode button and go into interval mode it works fine usually, but then holding down mode again to go back to normal mode results in clearing all my data and giving me the start-up display again. Sometimes I don't get the problem and it works ok.
Any ideas?
