Max HR and weight loss

Does weight loss affect your max herat rate?

In the last 6 weeks I've lost about 5 kilos as part of a plan to go from 100kg's down to around 80kg's. The issue is that I no longer seem able to reach the same max heart rate before I plateau and eventually have to ease off. The drop is currently about 6bpm off of my previous max which I could generally reach week in week out, particularly during the controlled environment of spinning classes, my perceived effort hasn't changed, I really don't think I could try any harder but I just plateau earlier.

Now what I can't tell from the spinning class is whether or not I'm more or less efficient for the same effort which I guess would be a better guage. While out riding I do seem able to put in equivalent times to the end of last Summer, which is unusual for me as I normally slack off during the winter months.

I'm not too hung up on this it's just something that I've noticed and been wondering about. anyone know if there is a correlation between MaxHR and weight loss?

Either you're over trained and picked up a bug, or you're just fitter and you're finding the spinning class easier
  • Thanks for the reply:

Over Training: Don't think it could be this, I do more or less the same number/intensity of workouts as I have for the past year, this really isn't very hard stuff, 3 spin classes(going all out), couple of half hour runs at a comfortable pace and a 2 hour(ish) medium intensity ride at the weekend.

Picked up a bug: Could be, I generally feel OK no lethargy or anything like that but I couldn't rule it out for sure.

Fitter/Easier: This had crossed my mind a week or so ago, so this week I made a concerted effort to definetly go all out, hard as I could and still I could only get with 6bpm of my previous max.

One other thing did occur to me. Could reduced calorie intake have a similar effect to overtraining/picking up a bug? i.e. you just don't have the juice for short sustained bursts. Maybe not having the instant energy stores?
  • In years gone by I was typically able to attain a higher HR when unfit and starting out after a layoff.

As fitness kicks in and heart stroke volume increases, it's not that unusual for max HR to drop a little for similar efforts or for it to take a very deep hard effort to get it up there. In my case it would require race motivation and adrenaline to dig that deep.
