Gym Equipment

Here at Beeston CC we are being offered the use of a Community building as a club house. What do people think would be the essential gym equipment they would want? I am thinking weights as they are the hardest thing to have at home .

  • Im a gym instructor and ive worked in quite a few of the big clubs, david lloyd, cannons, JJB etc.
Without a doubt the 1st things to get would be dumbbells and barbells, Proper heavy one's if poss.
Then you can start squating and lunging.
Benches would be next, for single leg squats and a little upper body work.
Then a squat rack or leg press.
People get strong legs from squating, lunging, deadlifts and leg press.
Leg extension and leg curl machines are ok but they are more for shaping and toning.

Also cv wise a decent rowing machine (concept 2) would be good, nothing beats 2000 meters and interval training on this to get the heart and lungs working.

    +1

My ideal gym would have (in order of usefulness):

    - Olympic bar + weights + dumbells
    - A big mirror to check form
    - A decent pull-up bar or (preferably) some gymnastic rings hanging off the ceiling
    - A bench
    - If you don't get rings, something to do dips on
    - Squat rack
    - Some mats
    - A selection of toys (medicine balls, balance boards, swiss ball).
    - A concept 2 to get warm

Perfect! Don't get sucked into buying loads of expensive machines, simple kit plus proper training is best, and make sure you have adequate free floor space.

However, (and without getting a debate about the usefulness of weights for cyclists) it's also worth bearing in mind the motivation and experience of people using this stuff, otherwise you might end up wasting money on stuff people won't use.

8 computrainers, a fast pc running multirider software, ergvideo, a projector and a big screen. Ready, steady, race!

Oh and some free weights and a swiss ball.

  • @djaeggi I was thinking we would keep it simple, especiallyat the begining to judge interest.
  • Yes - had a look at Computrainers. Wattbikes are not much more! Wattbikes are in the 'aspiration' category.
