credit card fraud?

Verified by visa user here and my card was stopped yesterday.
No idea which 'leaky site' was involved and nothing, I am aware of, has been purchased on the card without my consent.
I was a BIG on line buyer but will now reassess my movements.Powered by Haribo.0 -
Regrettably this week I have just had my 3rd Visa card sent through in a period of about 18 months, this is the second one in 8 months.
Unfortunately, and it may be a coincidence, it has always been a few days after making a purchase from the retailer mentioned at the beginning of the thread.
I have considered ringing the bank to get the actual transaction dates and writing to the company in question, but not sure if it will do any good.
The worst thing is on this latest fraud attempt, is that it nearly cost me my bloody Muse tickets, luckily they held them for me and I managed to buy them with another card, but that was a worrying moment, as no way was I going to get those at face value again.
Quite like the paypal idea, will do that instead I reckon from now on.
Otherwise I will be more likely to shop elsewhere.

I was done this week. Ordered a light on Tuesday, called by my bank on Wednesday to inform me that the police had contacted the bank to advise them that my card had been cloned. Luckily it was cancelled before they had chance to use it.
Will be using the Paypal option in the future. Shame.0 -

i gave the card details to an internet site which i won't name but it might rhyme with a city in germany that we almost destroyed in 1944/45....
after visiting the store/warehouse since and seeing that the card details are processed manually it is obvious that this is an internal affair..
i had not used my card for weeks before and made this one only transaction, then a couple of days later i found that my card had been stopped and when i checked online... there were a load of vodaphone top ups that had gone through...
i asked the bank if they were going to persue it with them only getting upto a couple of hundred pounds before it was stopped and they said that they would.
i will get my money back but i did offer to deal with it myself if they were not interested.
i will not use the internet anymore to scour around for the cheapest deal anymore... local shops might charge you a little bit more but you won't get this problem and it is much easier to sort out any problems with the goods afterwards.
I gave my card details by phone to the same store as above and shortly after was notified by MBNA that it had been used for internet gambling. This was the only time I had done this for a considerable time. The week after I had my identity stolen in an attempt to gain credit.0 -
I've got a card specifically for my cycling shopping (nothing to do with her indoors!) and I've had it 'cloned' 3 times inside the last year. Each time Capital One ring me and ask me if I'm in Canada / Australia and if I'm buying car tyres or gambling.
They only places this card was used are **gg**, Ch**********, M****n. Co-incidentally - since the last cloning I've used Paypal for **gg** and Ch************* and had no problem since.
I never thought anymore about this until I read this thread - I thought I must just be unlucky.0 -
I read this post last night and thought you guys posting must just be the unlucky ones as I've purchased from several of the main online shops a number of times since Feb and had no problems.
Went online today to do a non-bike related purchase and card was declined - quick call to the c/card co. and yes, someone's tried to spend £295 at a mobile phone retailer!!
Card stopped and hopefully just a few days without a c/card is the only damage - will look into Paypal in future.0 -
This seems to becoming extremely common, anyone know if the Police are investigating the matter?0

Well, having started a different thread some time ago on this issue, my credit card has been compromised once again. This time, the card issuer pulled the card as soon as it was used at a certain retailer (giggle), having "reasonable cause to believe that credit card scammers were in possession of my number".
As the above poster says, the rozzers really ought to get involved with this. I'm annoyed at myself for not using the paypal route. :twisted:0 -
I wonder whathaving "reasonable cause to believe that credit card scammers were in possession of my number".
If it means 'we see your card has been used at W.....', that's perhaps over-sensitivity on their part !
What does trigger the anti-fraud screening at your bank is interesting.
I bought something on eBay last month, there was an option to add a discretionary £1 to the seller's chosen charity on the Paypal page when I paid for it.
This then went through as two Paypal transactions, one for the item I'd bought and one for £1 to charity.
This was enough to trigger alarm bells at Capital One.
I do understand that one of the things scammers do with cards is try a low-value charity donation
- they get details of loads of cards on the internet for 50p each, want to know if a card works or has been stopped, so try a quick&easy charity donation for a small value. If the card fails, no problem, bin it and try the next. If it works, they've only used-up a bit of credit limit so off we go onto various websites and see what we can spend.
So I can see why this flagged-up as suspicious at Capital One, but what they did was leave a message on my answering machine at home (despite having my work & mobile numbers, so I had to ring the following day - just as well I hadn't had to use the card in the meantime... ) and told me that my card had been compromised and they'd stopped it.
I said no, it was me, the two transactions were legit, so they released them but said that thay couldn't un-stop my card and so they'd be sending me a new one (which meant I was using card no2 for a few days - just as well I have 2 cards...)Captain Fagor wrote:I'm annoyed at myself for not using the paypal route.
Personally I'm not keen at all on using PayPal
- do be aware that if you buy something over £100 on your credit card then the card issuer has Section 75 liability, meaning that they are also liable if the company supplying the goods goes bust
- and if you get into a dispute for non-delivery, or the quality of the goods, etc then you can take it up wit hyour credit card company
http://www.prudentminds.com/section-75.html
You won't get section 75 from your card issuer if you buy something via PayPal - you paid PayPal, Paypal paid the seller...

I've heard enough horror stories about Paypal dispute resolution on eBay to not want to have to go through them...0 -
andy - a couple of very interesting points you make there. I'd agree that my card issuer does seem to have a very robust approach to preventing fraud. Pro-active in the extreme, some might say. Funnily enough, I too donated a nominal £1 donation via bolting onto an ebay purchase about a month ago, but this wasn't enough to trigger any security concerns.
Your two cards tactic is one which I have already set the wheels in motion to employ. I plan on having an internet only, low (~£1000) credit limit card for the future. Also, I was blissfully unaware of the section 75 stuff being revoked on Paypal. Thanks for highlighting this.
I suppose with no dodgy transactions having taken place, my main gripe in this instance is the inconvenience of it all. Thank god my annual membership with teenage-russian-biker-sluts.com was processed in time!!0 -
I wish i had read this thread earlier!
Checked my account yesterday and i've been stung for six separate mobile phone top-ups just over a week ago totalling £90.
Im waiting for the police to turn up as i type, stopped my card at the bank and guess what....i've ordered stuff from several on-line bike retailers in the last month both of which have been previously mentioned in this thread. #
When i mentioned it to my mate who has also ordered stuff from these guys turns out he's been stung as well.
I've also used my card to buy other stuff but never had a problem with fraud before, I've only recently started ordering cycling stuff on-line .... coincidence ?0 -
Thanks for keeping this thread going. I stopped using this company several years ago when the same thing happened to me (got money back, new card etc.). They still send me emails once a month with offers of extra discount as they still have my email address on file.
It seems the police and credit card companies are slow to shut this problem down.
Never had a problem with the likes of ribble, parker etc. It would be a shame if this problem affects business with all on-line cycle retailers.0 -
I have had my card compromised 3 times right after using "Dibblecycles.co.uk". I use cash for most other things and the only common thread in the 3 months leading up to each of the problems was this shop. Once £30, once £2000 and once nothing as the attempt was thwarted.Greetings from the wet and windy North west0

I too have now had my debit card used for various online purchases of Easyjet and Ryanair tickets totalling about 700 quid. Never had any fraudulent transactions before starting buying cycling stuff at Dibble as of a few weeks ago.
Coincidence?0 -
Further to my rant re credit cards etc, I would have to say that the goods are quickly and accurately dispatchedGreetings from the wet and windy North west0

What an odd thing to buy fraudulently.
To fly you have to turn-up with photo id, matching the name you booked the seats for, so unless someone's gone to the trouble of fake photo id, should be obvious who it was who did this...0 -
Maybe I am making a wrong assumption thinking that the Easyjet and RyanAir transactions are for airline tickets....they may offer other services I am unaware of. Strange thing - one of the Easyjet transactions was refunded.
All very disturbing for me(being a bit of a worrier by nature )
I've set up another bank account which I will use exclusively for online purchases, making sure that there is little excess money in it.0 -

Got a call from Lloyds TSB Mastercard last night. Could I confirm some recent transactions on my card?
£5 to Oxfam - No.
£20 to Cellnet - No.
£200 to a cosmetics company - No!
£1690 to Empire Direct - NO!
The only valid transactions on the card were to three different online cycle retailers.
Does anyone know what is going on here? Are the systems fundamentally insecure or is it simply that some of those employees (be it the shops or banks) who have access to the information are passing it on?

Also had my card cancelled today after using it recently at two major internet bike shops. Second time this has happened in a year.
I'm just going to pay the extra and use my LBS in future...Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos0 -
How strange - I was thinking of starting a thread exactly like this one..
Got a new card 3 months ago after some fraud, and last week found out that this card has now been used fraudulently.
I don't spend that much on the card, so was easy to go back through 3 months of transactions and guess what ? The most likely suspects were online bike shops...
Very scary

got card refused today while trying to pay the service bill for my card... luckily had a large amount of cash in my wallet or may have had to walk home :-(
Barclaycard have stopped my card, 'due to approx. 30,000 cards being compromised' as of yesterday....
thing is i avoid using my card, wherever possible... but one thing i do use it for is on-line cycle stores and entry to sportives...... may be putting 2 + 2 and getting 5....0 -
Does anyone know if the Bizzies are investigating it yet? The "name and shame" of the same stores so many times is far too conclusive for any other possibility - either it's the online shops themselves, or someone who has hacked into the system.
Having said that, I'm surprised the "name and shame" policy has been allowed without the posts being edited to protect the identity of the suspects. Maybe they really are guilty until proven innocent. In any case I have NO INTENTION of using any of the stores in this thread for the time being.
Mine was a case where O2 had taken £30 out of my account for phone credit - I use a CONTRACT
Thankfully the card expired a day later, so no more damage could be done.
Any updates anyone?0 -
That's it people, keep BUMPING this thread. Keep everyone aware. The aforementioned miscreants won't see a penny of my money from now on.0

I had a fraud on my MBNA card recently, it is a 0% card that I got to put a balance on & only used it twice recently to pay the deposit on a bike from a Northern supplier, rhymes with but is NOT w***le.
Strangely enough, part of the fraud related to changing my address to Manchester, not a million miles away from said shop.
But who knows ? It was an Online transaction. My knees hurt !0 -
Card refused yesterday, 2nd time in 18 months, fraudulent phone top ups detected, card mainly used for purchases from "Officer Dibble".0
-
I had my barclaycard details stolen a couple of weeks ago which i put down to being in london that weekend, but after reading this it made me think.
I had purchased something from an online cycle retailer 2 days before, also sounds like riggle.
This is quite worrying.Kuota Kharma 20110 -
