I only use paypal to buy from them after rumours over the last two years.
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos

Happened to me in end of 2007. Of course it actually had nothing to do with them :?

Paypal only with them now and I avoid wherever possible.

How do you know it has nothing to do with them? It could be some sticky fingered blighter swiping details after processing orders and selling them on?

I had some fraudulent spending on my card but I don't know who is responsible. However I was buying stuff at one or two online bike store around that time.

I have bought stacks of stuff from them and never had a problem? I did not even hear there were rumors of problems with them?

Never had a problem with those folks in Portsmouth - more likely that your own personal security has been breached - you don't have a multi-million pound business to protect.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Twice some years back. Quite a few of my riding buddies, team mates apart from 1 had it. Most more then once like myself

I use only Paypal and never had a problem since, either with fraud or them guys down in Portsmouth

Isn't your insurance limited using PayPal, whereas you're always covered using a credit card?

I've used them for over 2 years and probably order weekly too.Never had a single problem with them.
I always use paypal to pay.
  • I see ribble have got that 'visa verified' now on their site. Maybe this is the way everyone will have to go as it does seem much more secure.

I know Tesco's etc use it but it looks like it might be filtering down into the bike trade now as well.

i agree, i know t mobile use the verified by visa thing too...

I understand your insured when using a credit card, but its the ball ache of having to be issued a new card etc after being scammed

A former flatmate of mine had card fraud done, off a card she had never actually used!

Hoping that if you buy something over the internet that it won't happen is therefore a pretty remarkable indication of the unrealistic assumptions we are able to make, you are after all just plugging information in and hoping for the best, aboslutely nothin really to stop staff from accessing that info and using it themselves in some way or another, this article shows how it can happen http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/scams.htm

Having said that I've bought plenty of stuff online and no fraud yet (fingers crossed stays that way)

Let's put it this way, i've always worked in retail and have been offered,by some chappy,to nick details and he'd pay me. He was a nasty piece of work who i met, whilst drunk, through a friend i would never do this as i don't think i could sleep at night(hard enough as it is). But it made me think how many gits there are this is why LBS is best.

My parents got hit by fraud and my mum was in a right state, luckily for me i haven't but i can imagine the anger and helplessnusmy dad must have felt.

Only fail safe way is to use Credit cards or cash unfortunately

I've just been reissued with my third new credit card and account in 4 months due to this. Unfortunately, the only link I can see between each occasion is the aforementioned web retailer.

It's always someone trying the card out with a couple of prepay mobile credits: O2, Vodafone or Tesco mobile so far. If they go through, cue a significant balance transfer.

I've now instructed my card company never to allow prepay mobile credits (whether they can actually enforce this or not is another matter) and will not personally be using said retailer except via PayPal in future.

Shame, as their service is first class.

I was aware of a rumour about said company.

I have just now removed my CC details from their website and will use Paypal in the future.

They did change their systems when they had all the trouble a few years back. Something to do with hanging onto the CVV numbers - thats a no-no - and their new system doesnt do that.

To be fair - I've used them a fair bit and been ok. Well there was the one time i spent £200 on US poker - but my card had been a lot of places - so cant pin that on them.

I won't name the shop - but I went to test ride a bike - thay asked for a passport (no problem) but they then wanted to a photocopy of the front & rear of my credit card - I couldn't beleive this - I refused - in the end they agreed only to copy the front !
  • Is this a particular problem with Egg cards as I had mine cloned the day after I order from the aforementioned store. I've used my other cards with them and had no problems which is wierd.

Egg have always had high fraud incidents, something like 3 times the average. Though probably that's because they're an internet bank and so have more web-user customers.

At the end of the day... Sod it. Just watch your bills and let your bank do their job when it happens.

Only been 'done' once and that was on a USA site with a debit card I'd never used, but when I read this thread about amazon.co.uk and credit card fraud last year I went through all my online accounts and deleted or invalidated the credit card details. I only enter the correct details when I need to order and wipe them afterwards.

Exactly the same thing happened to me and my card has been cancelled as of yesterday. Couple of £2.00 entries, they then went for £220 and £440. Luckily my bank were savvy enough to spot them for what they were. Still a major pain in the bum though, I wanted to order a pair os Assos tights :(

I have just been done. Barclaycard phoned me up with some £5 and £10 transactions for mobile phone top ups. While i know i won't be liable for the money the hassle of waiting for anew card is a pain in the ass.

The sooner ALL UK Online retailers are made to use verified by Visa or Mastercard secure the better.

Happened a couple of years ago and it was on Amazon.co.uk. Not had any of the bike retailers give me any trouble.

I had an issue last year with several payments over a 4 week period, sometimes up to 60 quid in one day. Seems they were for a "3" pay as you go 3g service. The only place's I have used my card that I can think of where I wasn't present were Amazon, The local Chinese takeaway and an online cycling store. Obviously someone somewhere is taking personal card details......Never seems to end up as a criminal investigation though.

Same here with the phone company test transactions but they usually get blocked by Barclaycard. The £90 to a flower company after the scrote changed the address on my card went through ok though..

On my third card in the period of a few months. There have only been a few companies I used with the last card so I'm starting to wonder.

Barclaycard's online security is very poor too (for a year, they gave me access to my dad's accounts, but not to my own, just because we share a first initial and used to be at the same address. It was incredibly hard to get that fixed, they kept on locking my account because I was "fraudulently" trying to access it but weren't at all interested in taking me off my dad's, kept on sending me credit card cheques in my name for it even though I'm not on the account, stuff like that. So no wonder you get security breaches.

If you do a lot of online stuff it's worth having 2 cards, since sooner or later you'll lose access to one card and it's annoying.

Just had the same, thankfully bank noticed - transactions were O2 and Carphone warehouse, couple of £0.01, then £1.01 then 2x £391.27, next three attempts blocked. I had also just used the same store that is not being named. Same pain in the arse with new card etc too...

When you ask a hotel in Russia to send you a visa application voucher they also ask you scan BOTH sides of your credit card and email it to them before they will send the papers. This is despite the fact that you have already booked the blinkin' hotel with your card.
The way I deal with it is to photocopy both sides of the card then cross out the CV number on the photocopy. I then scan the photocopy and email that to Moscow. This way they don't see your CV number.
If fraud can happen via reputable stores in the UK then I'm damn sure not going to take a chance in Russia!!!
