What is your Max & Average Commuting Speed

Hi, I am a seasoned cyclist but I have had a couple of years slumming it with the plebs on the tube. Now back in the game and so glad for it. I used the CTW scheme to buy a new bike and all the equipment needed, including a computer.

When I finished my journey in today, it read:
11.6 miles total distance / 29.0mph max speed / 13.0mph average speed.

I remember reading a stat in the press a couple of years ago that the average speed for cars in London during rush hour is 12mph. So that my 13 mph average was quite pleasing to me. I am badly unfit at the moment and I was barely trying so I know that I will be able to increase both the average and the max speeds, but I am not sure by how much.

I am interested in what I can aspire to, so what are your equivalent stats? (FCN / total distance / max speed / ave speed)

I am NOT interested in your social rides or how quickly you go round the velodrome, commuting only! For reference, my FCN is 5.

FCN 8 (soon to be 7)

    Distance: ~8.5 miles
    Max Speed: 29.7
Ave Speed: 12ish (depending on going home or coming in - oddly faster on the more uphill route!)

    And just to show off:
    Max Cadence: 95
    Ave Cadence: 60-65ish

15-16 mph average is par for the course for me on the way in regardless of gears/ SS. Much less on the way home due to the traffic - 13 if I'm lucky. Max speed is 26-27 on SS but have just stuck a bigger gear on so hoping to break through the 30 barrier. Low 30s with gears.

My FCN is 7 on my SS.

Average for 2009 (only 2 weeks) is 15.1mph, max is 26.2mph. Depending on how I go I may be switching back towards my beloved big gear this week, which should result in faster travel.

    FCN - 5

My commute is 22.6 miles and I average anywhere between 16 and 19 mph depending upon traffic conditions, weather, and how hungover I am. My best is a 20mph average, and I'd like to keep it constant at about 18, but that's proving difficult over 4/5 days. My fastest recorded speed to date is 42mph down Shooters Hill

    51 kph (31.8 mph) max
    23.1 kph (14.4 mph) average
5.1 miles each way, from Bitterne to Hollybrook via the Common (if you know Southampton)
276ft climb, 200 ft descent (bound for home)
FCN: 6? (hairy legged roadie in work clothes with raceblades)

Edit: Average speed corrected (lowered) after discovering a misreading in the sunset last night... Now more like what I expected the speedometer to show!

I get a nice variety of routes to choose from with my commuting, distances can vary from 2 to 13 miles!

Max speed: Depending on route chosen can be anywhere from 30-40mph, now it's getting drier and warmer I'll be hitting the steeper hill more often to try and better my PB!

Average: Normally between mid 15 and high 16, varies depending on how many of those ruddy red lights I hit and if I find any worthy opposition :-)

Again based on the average speed of a car in central London being a (rather generous) 12mph I think this is great!

My commute's a mere 2-2.5 miles depending which way I go (I went a longer way round today, actually worked out as quick- fewer junctions etc), takes about 10 minutes to get back from work (at 8-8.30), usually nearer 15 going in (just before noon). I know, slow- but apart from me being slow, lots of junctions, turns, traffic lights, and stupid drivers acting like I'm invisible. I doubt I'd be faster on a really flash road bike, I am of course open to testing that theory :)

    Holy hell.

I need to get fit. How in Gods name are some of you guys getting such high numbers? I'm happy if I do my 14.5 commute in an hour at the moment. Personal best is 50 mins, but the Winter hiatus (and working away from site) has slowed me right down again.

Mind you - I've just spent a FORTUNE on the car so I'll be cycling to and from more often now whether I want to or not!

Max Speed Flat Regular = 22mph

Im gonna be on an 103K Audax this weekend in Hathersage with 2180 metres of climbing. Would like to improve my climbing to the same level I had last year as im feeling out of it a bit at the mo.

Is anyone else going on this ride?

If not and anyone would like the route sending in case you get over that way would be happy to send it. :D

Is it possible to PM in this forum. Didnt look before I wrote the message.

FCN 6 Commute home last night 15.5 miles, Max 39, average 19.6
Commute in this morning, 14.2 miles, max 35 average 18 - didn't want to be too sweaty when I got in.

Best home commute average was 21.4 with a max of 44, usually takes between 43 minutes and 48 depending on wind mostly.

This includes climbing a total of 218m on the way home, 8 miles on pretty much constant uphill

    Hi,

    FCN 9, apparantly (dirty/functional fixie+beard+toeclips)

Commute work 4.65 miles Av (13 trips) 17.6mph max 31mph.

Commute home 4.5 miles Av (9 trips) 18mph max 36mph

TBH, the home run ought to be quicker, as it's more downhill, but I sometimes cycle with a slower friend, or pick up shopping etc, so the average gets pulled down. The ride in tends to be focussed on catching the 0722!
There's a half-mile or so at the other end that I don't log- this varies more, depending on where I'm working- it was a mile at the end of last year and two or three during the summer.

    Cheers,
    W.
