I'm thinking velodrome day. Oh yes I am. I have the mobile number for the guy who runs Herne Hill somewhere...

Indeed Castle ITB is in the sticks but only 75mins from Paddington or Waterloo by train so not that difficult unless like myself you choose to cycle to the train station either end of the day then you're looking at a daily commute of about 5-6hrs not bad when you add a normal 12hr working day on top :?

It's no wonder I was always so damn tired.

And where? There might be a few spectators...

RP? It will allow for a flat out drag race.

With DDD's growling, I'm actually picturing that scene out of Bedknobs and Broomsticks when they're playing some sport against snorting beasts.

:) What the deuce? DDD and JB sprinting outside the cafe in RP? I say!

Yep, this is what I have in mind (it's rather like a track sprint):

They roll off from the roundabout at Robin Hood Gate and shadow each other's moves, slowly revving it up until...

they reach the point where you can see the bridge just before the turning for the golf club, at which point the hammer goes down. The victor is the one who eaches the bridge first. :D

I think a full lap is in order, full on sprint style so we have the two of them weaving around the path waiting for the other to make a move :-D

I can see the attraction of both, so why not one lap then the sprint?

That assumes we'll stay in touch over the lap, not sure that'll happen. DDD has challenged me to a sprint as that's where his strengths lie. Given I'm a regular to RP a lap would probably give me an unfair advantage, putting distance between us and negating the challenge of the sprint at the end.

TT could be the answer, take the long straightish last down hill leg that should give you both a chance to max out, fastest time wins.

Traffic is probably too variable to get a fair result. We want mano a mano all guns blazing action.

Nah, TT's are no fun - no dueling to be had:

I agree. I think we may have to do it in the dead of night once the park's closed... Everyone turn up with at least one good front light and we'll have a lit drag strip. It'll be like mad max.

I def prefer the velodrome style cat and mouse sprint, which adds a tactical dimension to the balls out racing.

Also - and I appreciate this might not go down well - should the contestants not use the same machinery?

Why? This isn't done anywhere else in cycling is it? Hoy's bike is not the same as Theo's, Cavendish's is not the same as Armstrong's, etc.

Not sure where we are going to find 2 identical bikes that fit anyway.

No, you're right, jash. So in the interests of fairness, how about you swap bikes? I know an honourable chap like you wouldn't want to have any unfair advantage.
