not enough people know about fig rolls.

they are, bar none, the very best energy food you can buy. and they taste good too.

as for tesco bankrupiting bike shops, utter pish. they sell a small selection of add ons or replacement parts, mainly to the sort of people who dont even know where thier lbs is, and people like me who have a nose around when theyre in to see whats what.

yes, theyre a for profit company and so that is thier main concern, but dont think for a single second that the mtb industry is anything else. specialized dont make bikes for the love of it (well, they do partly), they make them to sell and to make profit.

Tesco is good competition for bike shops, my local tescos and asda have forced my lbs to go up - market - :D
they now stock good accesories and bikes, not to mention a bmx that even i can see is top notch.

Where there is a lack of competition, Tescos can squeeze their suppliers for every penny they can get away with, some of it is passed onto the customer, but most goes into their pockets.

Now I can't imagine any Bike Shop doing that :P

    LOL Figging Hell

I work collegue brought in a large pack of Tesco's own Digestives
the other day we told him to walk throught the workshop and buy
    the real stuff.
    Cheap git.

Jesus one thing you need to know is that if Tescos have a buy one get one free
    on a particula item.
It is not Tescos whos gives the item free, they tell the company they are going
to do a offer on there product and tell them to give it free.

You dont have an option has they are that large and with buying power too.
There is making a profit but an honest one
  • Im really not interested in how tescos make thier porofit, thats not the issue here.

in the last few weeks I have bought the following bike related products from them.

    1 multi tool - £3.50
    1 chain tool - £0.49
    bikewash - £1.80
    TF2 lube - £2.24
    mini pump - £6.00
    tyre levers - £1.49 for 3

thats around £15 for quite a lot of kit.

there was another thread about thier lights too, stupidly cheap and about the best you can buy for any price, within reason.

yes, they are undercutting the lbs, sometimes by around 50%, but thats not my problem and neither is it my concern. if my lbs charges twice as much as tesco then somebody is getting ripped off. I know the smaller shops have less buying power and have relatively larger overheads, but this sort of price fixing has got to stop and tescos are going to force them to stop it.

No one is going to get their bike serviced in Tesco's, or splash out on a three grand full susser. There will always be a place for your LBS for the really important things in life!

Besides, we should all be more worried about Evans taking over... choice. fading...

The only reason I don't use washing up liquid and water is beceause I heard it does bad things to brake pads, or is this another myth? i rinse after I wash so this should be ok?

'Cause the price of Muc Off etc is a joke - another example of put a bike sticker on it and charge a fortune  Same recently with degreaser: £8 for a small tin 500ml from lbs but £12 for 3 litres of concentrated stuff from eBay.

Biking needs places like Tesco to start shaking things up price wise - the profits on "special" bike parts must be huge for lbs and/or manufacturers. I just paid £25 for a set of Fox 36 seals, I'm not a plastics manufacturer but if they cost any more than $2 to make I will drink some f that degreaser :?

The sooner biking goes mass market (places like Tesco) and we start seeing the benifits of more competition the better and not just for low end stuff.

We are a "honeypot" for profit

Myth (I think) It's water based so it'll come off with water and wont affect brake pads even if you don't wash it off the water in it'll evaporate then whats left'll be rubbed off when you use the brakes.

Some of the spare parts prices from Fisher are hilarious - a set of Tora lowers for 170 quid. You can buy the whole fecking fork for less than 100!

If washing up liquid is soo bad why do Mojo adivse that you wash down a newly fitted fox shox with "Warm soappy water" prior to setting it up correctly and going for your first ride :?:

Soapy water and washing up liquid aren't the same. Most washing up liquid is completely full of salt, mainly to make it thicker. If you want a really cheap bike cleaner, try the Tesco Daisy concentrated general purpose cleaner, it's about a pount and makes up about 50 litres of cleaner even in strong concentration. It actually might strip paint if you leave it on, but the solution to that is kind of obvious...

Some of the tesco stuff is tat... The front LED bike lights shine green, they're like the very first LED lights from the dawn of time. (though the rear ones are OK, I use one on my bag on the road). The locks are total rubbish, and the multitools aren't very good either. But the tubes are fine, so is the big pump. Oh, they also sell various energy gels etc at a far better price than you'll find elsewhere, still a rip-off but not so bad.

PS, in my local, the bike stuff is right beside the horsie stuff, there's always at least one dodgy looking geezer eyeing up the whips.

And what about the LBS' distributors? I asked for a new bearing race from the LBS, and I called the distributors to find out how much it would cost to order one from them myself. The LBS gave the part to me at cost because they did a load of other stuff to the bike as well and I was amazed to find that the distributors would sell it to me cheaper than the store! I watched two LBS' go bust in Bangor because they had such small profit margins. How can they remain competitive if the distributors aren't on their side? Anyone else seen the distributors over charging the LBS'?

But there is a Tesco in Bangor too... So maybe it's not all the distributors fault.

Right, so I just went to Tescos to get some of this Daisy stuff that I keep hearing about. When I got to the section where the cleaning products are, I found about a billion trillion things called 'Daisy'. There's stuff for washing machines, dishwashers, a washing up liquid etc all called Daisy. What am I looking for exactly? It was a struggle to find anything that wasn't called Daisy. I ended up buying a trigger spray bathroom/kitchen type cleaner for 46p but I have a feeling that wasn't the right Daisy.

But I did get a dual action pump with a gauge for just under a fiver. Didn't expect it to be any good but the internals look the same as the Topeak one that Halfords sell for £20. Although the outside and gauge are completely different.
  • I HATE Tesco, they put everyone out of business and give nothing back to the country by banking offshore  (that's what I was told anyway)

  • well soon there will be just one shop TESCOS and when tescos has forced all the local shops to close there prices will go up, thats what they do its called bussiness and making profit. dont be fooled by there cheap offers its only part of there plan.
there fig rolls are full of sugar thats why there cheap.
this may sound odd but marks and spencers are actulay cheaper then tescos.
go look its tru and whats not cheaper is a 100 times better then what tescos sell.
hmm dont think they sell cycling gear though.
support your local shops dont forget you get good advice and a freindly service.
which is some thing tescos cant offer.

Don't really need the anti bacterial stuff tho, this is he only pic I could find :)
  • That's the washing up liquid - I thought people on here were saying it was the general purpose cleaner that was supposed to be good. (Although I'm sure washing up liquid will do the job fine!)

Surely the less we spend on the small stuff like cleaner in Tescos, the more we will have to spend on bikes/components in our lbs??

Yeah, I thought I'd heard something about a general purpose cleaner. I'll definitely give the washing up liquid a go though, thanks for that Ben.

Luckily, I have a kitchen and a bathroom so I can make use of the spray stuff that I got this morning.
  • No worries. If your cleaning you bike that ^ daisy is perfect. Tis what I use. Just don't leave it on too long and just use a small squirt in some hot water to get some bubbles going :)

    Agreed.

If I went to the lbs to buy, for example, a rear mech. And I also had to stock up on things like cleaner, tubes and lube. Then the savings made by buying these things at the supermarket could be the difference between Sram X7 and Sram X9.

So I need to rinse it with just plain water afterwards, right?

Has anyone else had problems using car shampoo? I tried it just after having XTR disc brakes fitted and they didn't really work at all for about 7-8 miles. I figured that the car shampoo must have contained some sort of wax.

  • I don't think its Tescos that will put the lbs out of business its more likely to be online stores like Wiggle or Tredz. As said before Tescos only stock a limited range of cycling stuff But Wiggle has everything you will ever need. But hey as I am skint I will have to ignore my conscience and listen to my pocket.

Spot on. Car shampoo contains a thin wax so that your car looks extra shiny. It'd be fine using it on the frame but you really don't want it on your brakes.

Mostly I use my hosepipe and blast the filth off when I'm cleaning my bike. Occasionally I'll use a drop of Wilkinson's own washing up liquid and a cloth to clean the fiddly bits.
  • Wax on your brakes!!! that'll make you quicker!

hopefully you wernt on a steep technical downhill when you found out!!
  • the daisy all purpose cleaner is normally found in the same section as the flash APC and the tesco own brand,
its recently gone up and is now 80p ish for 1.5L which is diluteable 1:10 which makes it less than 8p/L!
it is in a clear container with a red lid, its bright yellow and has Daisy on the fornt like all the daisy products,
i have some in the shed for the bike, in the kitchen for the floors and int he bathroom, for sub £1 it barely matters! works as a good cleaner, just make sure you rinse the bike down nicely after and run clean water through your chain cleaner,

i have to admit, i bought a pump from tesco, one with the valve, and its alright, although a little pants when you want a quick inflate, but the inner tubes are greatvalue, £1.86 each and regularly discounted to £1.50, cant beat them when the lbs are £4 ish! yeah there not super light but they work and last which is all i need,

for the average cyclist they are great, all the kit they need to get them started for a few quid And the convienience of picking it up with the shopping, yeah they undercut the lbs's but for the type of people that use tesco for all the bike bits they wouldnt know of the lbs! a few of the guys in our lbs's use tesco tubes in their bikes!!
there is also the convienience that if your fiddling with the bike one saturday evening ready for the sunday ride for instance and suddenly need lube/tubes etc. if you have a 24hr tesco's you can nip out and get the make do parts top keep you on the bike until you can get to the lbs!
