Now thats easy... cruising up to the lights on a cummute to work. I was filtering through traffic and suddenly found myself sliding on my chest through the gap between cars into advanced stop zone for bikes.
No harm done and can only figure a touch the newly painted white line. Dusted myself off and had to sheepishly walk back through the cars to pick up my bike.FCN: 40 -

haha, I did somtthing similar, I was waiting at the lights, stopped, trying to balance the bike without putting my feet on the ground. Next thing I know I overbalanced and hit the deck, I could hear all the laughter coming from nearby cars! No one even said are you ok!0 -
Sideswiped at 50km/hr by a car travelling even faster than that in Sydney.
Went down hard on a road which was badly in need of resurfacing.
Fractured right wrist & skin shred off all my limbs. Hole in my arm. Brief emergency room visit + morphine administered intravenously. Pschologically damaged more than anything.
Second accident was a minor commuting thing where a car swerved in front of me to grab a parking space. Sideswiped twice in as many years. Fell awkwardly, fingertips hitting the to part of the gutter. Hand bent backward as far as it could go and end of radius(?) bone broke (I soon learned fractures aren't as painful). Looking at the buldge in my wrist, I knew it was broken by the sheer pain. Writhing around on the ground in agony. Driver more worried about cleats damaging car door paint job.  :evil:0 -
My worst crash was not so bad but quite a funny one.
It was me riding here in China, where traffic is crazy but even crazier during rush hours. It was at that point that me and some mates cycled back home. On a slightly downhill inclined section we reached quite good speed and swayed around all the pedestrians, cars, cabs, donkey cars, tricycles and street sellers until one woman tried to cross the road checking us out (imagine 100 people crossing but only one paying attention to the 'crazy' foreigners on their bikes). Whenever i would move to the right, she would move to the right. I adjusted to the left and she started walking to the left again..........unitll. ...........yes i just fully crashed into her.
Luckily me and my friend new some good Chinese swearing words!
It became quite a scene.I like cycling but I LOVE crazy cycling ventures

Today
Hit a rat....... did some aerial acrobatics then slammed back first into the back of a Jaaguar. I spent 30 mins on my back an hour and a half on a back board and neck brace then got the ok with a fractured rib. Quite lucky really.http://twitter.com/mgalex

Overshot a corner and hit a wall on Saturday, not my finest hour Messed my face up a bit but the helmet took the brunt of it0

Ooh some nasty ones on here
On a 25 mile TT, glanced at computer, looked up and was erm no longer on the road. Hedge was a soft landing but bars hit a fence on the left and fractured left arm. Won't be so silly again and find myself very hesitant to let the bike pick up too much speed on descents but I guess the confidence will come back.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I feel the same about descending, find it very hard to commit myself to corners and to get the speed up as I'm constantly thinking "what if?""In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

I was riding my fixed gear bike, a guy jumped in front of me, don't have a recollection of what exactly I did, but must have panicked and etheir applying the front brake or trying to stop pedalling (remember fixed gear) sent me down. It happened so fast I didn't have time to put up my hands for protection and took the brunt of the impact with my nose. I'm not going into details, but I'm very lucky to be alive.0

my worst injury was about 5 years ago just on a normal bike nothing special was on a busy road, my own fault didn't look both ways then, BAM. The road was a normal 30 MPH road but the driver was going way past that, dont remember alot but found out i had a broken femur, 2 broken ribs, dislocated shoulder, and a fractured skull. My helmet had literally split in 2 and had a nasty bump and got a nice little ditch in my head where they had to drill in.
I had a wonderfull stay in hospital for a very long time, and ill say this physio therapy hurts like hell, but its not stopped me from cycling but ill sure to remember to look both ways in future. i got myself a nice little Scott Sportster so does the job for me quite well.0 -

stopped in a queue of traffic, right foot still clipped to the pedal left foot on the ground. Leant over to the right to look round the van in front of me to see if I could cycle past in the wrong lane. Started to realise that leaning to the right with my foot still clipped in was a really bad idea but it was too late and I was already falling over into the wrong side of the road and the oncoming traffic has to stop while I picked myself up. No harm done but I made a complete idiot out of myself.0 -
I can only offer two:
1. Poddling at 17mph. Mondeo man (witnesses say doing about 55mph) tries to scare me by going too close and succeeds. Knocks me off. He comes back to the scene after 10 minutes. I have deformed right shoulder, wrecked bike and his nearside wing mirror (bit of a clue there). Police take 50 minutes to answer the call and then write "Not applicable" in their accident report form for the time of response. (My wife got there quicker). Driver was offered remedial driving lessons instead of prosecution; police said I could take legal action at my own expense and charged my solicitor for access to their accident record.
2. Braked hard behind heavily brakjng traffic. Left foot fails to disengage from cleat. I go over to the left in slo-mo and cushion my arrival on the kerbstone with my thigh. Broken hip.
Now on first name terms with osteopods at local hospital.. but still riding

I didnt get injured but it scared the life out of me.
I stopped to let a car through in the opposite direction and was using cleats for the first time. I came to a halt and then found myself falling in the pathway of the car. I hit the groung and my head was about an inch from the car's side.
I've got a bit more practice in now and also get my foot loose well before stopping!0 -
Resurrecting an old old thread...
Jan 2nd this year, I was on the front of a club run on a cold day, left turn coming up, I see a pothole full of ice on the apex of the turn so loudly shout ice, as soon as I shout this I'm on the tarmac coming down heavily on my left side after not spotting the black ice that took me out.
The result? a broken hip and elbow0 -
Sorry to hear about your accident Marko. I also came off on some ice recently. This was early one morning at the end of Jan. Broken elbow. Have had tension band wiring done - if you ride with NCC maybe you also went bionic at Warrington General? I have only just in the last few days got back on the turbo. I feel pretty lucky compared to some people on this thread.0
-
Yup went bionic at Warrington under the ace care of Mr Atkinson.
Steve you say you have a broken elbow, hows the rehab and bone healing going? I've been on my turbo for a couple of 30 min sessions and find that it is extremely painful to put any of my weight through my mending elbow on the bars...0 -
Well since it's been resurrected, thought I'd mention that in 2007, a few months before my accident/amputation, I captained the winning team at our team pursuit championships and we set a new record time along the way.
On the weekend, I captained the winning team at our team pursuit championships and we set a new record time along the way (and again in the final).
My average power was higher this time than last time (although they were different distances).
See here for more on that:

Alex, your story is truly inspirational. I should point out that I thought this prior to breaking a measly elbow!
Marko: I'm going for an x-ray today so we'll see. Yes, putting weight on the bars through that arm is still a no-no. I've got quite a bit of flexibility back but I think there's quite a way to go.0 -
Ten yrs ago cycling downhill a fairly steep hill to work, so guess i was going 20 / 25 ish mph, the biggest alsation dog i've ever seen ran out into the road & hit me, sending me into the path of car, which err..... hit me ! resulting in:-
Four fractured vertebrae & a displaced spine
Four broken ribs
dislocated shoulder
Fractured clavicle.
Had metalwork in the spine which has now gone, but i've still got two plates & 12 bolts in the clavicle
Ouch!
Still on the bike though & weirdly my back is stronger than before & never troubles me'Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts'.0 -
nothing too bad, a few lucky escapes on the roads commuting (e.g. speeding down a hil lin wandsworth, overtake a bus only to hit a car coming out of a private yard). Worst was a crash in a race. Rider in front of me hits a traffic cone and takes me out as well. I landed heavily on gravel, bad road rash to one side of body, deep cuts on ankle, hip and a big bit taken out of the elbow. Elbow got dirt in it and eventually became inflected.
I had made my way to the race on public transport, no club mates around and family away for the day, so decided to go home on public transport, I must have been a sight. By the time I got to my local station I could hardly walk as everything was stiffening up. Eventually I made it to my local hospital and then phoned my wife. It happened a month before my our summer holidays, which I spent watching the family doing things!
It was fascinating watching the elbow heal itself, the hole slowly filled up with new very jelly-like flesh etc and one day the skin then grew back. I should have photographed the process.0 -
Had one or two
1) First as a kid was on my Chopper. Had one of those speedos with a dial on it. Was going down a steep downhill and just as I managed to get it off the scale (think it maxed at 40mph) massive speed wobble and went down. Concussed for a while but somebody stopped and got me home
2) Hit a bump on a downhill fireroad on the MTB. Bars came out of my hands and went down. Skinned one leg from thigh to shin-not serious but hurt like hell!
3) Warming up at Dalby for a round of the British MTB XC series. Decided I should attack Medusuas drop there and got it badly wrong.Grade 4 ACJ dislocation. Resulted in shoulder op. Still mending but only stopped me riding for about 9 weeks0 -
I was riding the "Valley of the Rocks" 200km audax as a test ride with the organiser. It was February but that year there was some good weather and the ground was dry, it was warm, there was no ice or anything like that.
On the descent to "Hunters Lodge" I saw the guy I was riding with go ahead. He descends fast so I wasn't going to try and stick with him. I'd not been down this hill before but I was vaguely familar with the area there are some very steep bits. All I did was go into a hairpin on a 25% section a bit too fast. Left it too late to brake properly, couldn't push my weight back as the hill was too steep. The front might have locked too. I knew I was going over the bars. Last thought..."this is going to hurt"
Next I knew I was picking myself up, a car driver stopped and asked if I was ok. I said no and my mate was probably down at the bottom at the pub. He offered me a lift, he had a bike carrier on top of his car. I tried to lift the bike onto the car but found I couldn't raise my arm.
I had smashed up my collar bone, the break was fairly clean. I was off the road for 3 months. That's the only time I have used a turbo every day.0 -
Fortunately nothing as serious as some reports here, but I did once see how far I could ride with my eyes closed and of course ran into the kerb. Got a few cuts and bruises, and a look of bemused pity from a guy who checked I was all right. I must have been about eleven or twelve at the time.0

Chugging on the commute to work in Sutton Coldfield, in the gray drizzle, and school-run Mum ploughed into me from the side. She never saw the fat bloke in hi-viz with gazillions of watts of flashing lights!
Crushed right leg, blood streaming from right shoulder and face, glasses broken and partially buried into face, crushed right foot and a written off Lemond Alpert D'Huez.
It took 24 months to get her insurance company to settle.0
